Hello Westside Elementary Students!

Principal Copeland has chosen your class to help plan a HUGE party to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Boy oh boy, you have a huge task ahead of you! This job is full of fun and exciting details. When you are done, you will have planned an extraordinary celebration that incorporates what there is to know about Hispanic Heritage. This web quest will help students become more familiar with Hispanic traditions and information that will  help them understand the importance of Celebrating the Hispanic Culture we enjoy in our country today.

TASK:

Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than food and fun. Your challenge is to describe what Hispanic Heritage Month is really about. You are to determine why we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and what it means to our community. Most people celebrate because of tradition. You are to find out what the  traditions are, and why we should really celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to your explorations, you must research one of the Hispanic countries below. During your research you will report the country's location, traditions, foods, famous people, and any other fun important facts. 

After your research is done, your final task will be to complete your table set-up sheet. 

Your class will research one of the Spanish-speaking countries and create a poster, diorama, etc. which displays your findings, what is important about your country.

And finally, your class will make an ARTIFACT; Aztec rug, Sombrero, or any other item from the Hispanic Culture to demonstrate your knowledge and appreciation of Hispanic culture. These items will be used to decorate your table for our celebration.

Step One: Research the country you are assigned and explain why we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. You must include the information on the handout for your country. Only one sheet per group. Go to the link below to find information on your country.

Step Two: Your class will choose two creative tasks to complete for our Pop-up Carnival. Your choices will be determined by your class. Choose things to do that are creative and in some manner reflect the research you have done about your country and Hispanic Heritage. Some possibilities are: a game, food from your country (including the recipe and why it is important in that country), a video montage of images/music from the country researched, etc.

Step three: Create  poster, diorama, or some other sort of display about your country and Hispanic Heritage month. Please be sure to include all the information you were tasked with discovering.

Step four: Create Carnival Decorations- Each class of party planners will follow the directions on how to create their own picado banner, paper aztec rug or sombrero. Design a one which represents something about your country.

Step five: Team Classroom Presentations � Each class will present their findings about the country, Hispanic Heritage Month, and their creative work...And then CELEBRAMOS!
