Heroes of the Past

Introduction

by Charlotte Banih

This 5-day WebQuest is designed for 1st year students to learn about heroes from the past. Students work individually to research their hero using the given links and their textbook, and later work in groups to create a timeline.

Do you know what kinds of people have made our world what is it today? Some people from our past have invented things that we now use every single day, others have made decisions in the government that have changed the way we live our lives, and still other men and women have made our lives more enjoyable through the things that they did. Through your research, our class will learn about these HEROES – people who have changed the world in important ways.

Task

To complete this task, you must choose a hero from the list to research. Once you have decided on a hero to learn about, you will use the textbook and the links given to learn as much as you can about that person. Take notes on what you learn. Later, you will be put in a group with students who chose different heroes. Together, you will make a timeline with all of your heroes on it. Write the dates they lived, what they are famous for, and why what they did was important. To finish this WebQuest task, your group will present your timeline in front of the class, teaching them the information and including interesting facts about your heroes.

Process

1. Choose a hero from the following list that you want to learn about.

  • Jose Rizal
  • Andres Bonifacio
  • Emilio Aguinaldo
  • Apolinario Mabini
  • Marcelo H. del Pilar
  • Juan Luna
  • Melchora Aquino
  • Gabriela Silang

2. Before you begin looking up information, think about what you need to learn. You will need to know:

  • The years that the person was born and died
  • What the person is famous for
  • Why what they did was important
  • Any other interesting facts

As you research, take notes on these things in your journal. Make sure to write which website or book you got each piece of information from!

3. When you are ready, begin researching and taking notes! You may use:

  • Look up your hero’s name in the index or glossary of our history textbook.

4. After two days of research, I will put you into a group of four people. Each of you will have studied different heroes.

5. Each group will be given a timeline poster. Working together with your group, write the names of your heroes on the spot they belong on the timeline (between their birth and death dates).

6. Under each hero’s name, write:

  • The years that the person was born and died
  • What they are famous for
  • Why what they did was important

7. On Day 5, groups will begin presenting. When it is your group’s turn to present, each person will share with the class what they wrote on the poster, as well as some interesting facts about their hero.

8. When other groups are presenting, listen to what they have to say! You will need to know about all of these heroes for the quiz!

Conclusion

You have now learned a lot of information about several everyday heroes. They were just regular people, but they were able to do really great things that still help people even today. If you want to help people, and if you work hard in school, you could also end up a hero like the people we studied this week. Who knows, you may even be in a WebQuest for future second graders to study!
