Helpers in the community

Introduction

Everyday, the people in our community work so hard to keep us happy, healthy and safe. These people are usually called community helpers or helpers in the community. For this web quest, you will explore different helpers in the community and as well learn about the importance of what jobs they do. 

 

Guiding Questions: 

1. Who are the community helpers?

2. What job does the community helper do?

3. How does the community helper help our community?

 

Learning Objective: 

Students will identify and explain the role of a community helper(s) by using online resources to create a group presentation. 

 

Florida's B.E.S.T standard's: 

SS.K.CG.2.AP.1: Identify the helper and their roles in the community.

ELA.K12.EE.1.1: Using visuals to demonstrate understanding.

Task

The task is that you guys will work in a small group to create a short presentation about one community helper. 

 

Presentation: 

- A detailed power point that is narrated.

- A google presentation with detailed slides.

- A poster with pictures and words.

 

The group will explain about: 

-The community helpers name?

- In detail of what the community helper does?

- How does the community helper help the people around?

 

Process

Step 1 (Form Groups): Students will work in a group of 4 students maximum. 

 

Step 2 (Choose Roles): Each member will have a role.

 

Each group member will have a role: 

Researcher- Finds Information

Reader- Reads information aloud

Designer- Adds pictures and help organize 

Speaker- Shares the information with the class

Step 4 (Presentation):

 

-Include 4 pictures

- Include two to three sentences about the job of the helper.

-Include student narration unless assistance from teacher is needed.

 

Step 5 (Present): 

Practice with your assigned group and present your project to the class.

 

 

Evaluation

Criteria: 

 

The group project will be graded using a basic rubric.

- Area Three is considered excellent along with active participation.

-Area Two is satisfactory which is considered with some clear information.

Area One is considered for support needed with not enough information given.

Thank you guys for doing a great job with the presentation about the community helpers! Students discovered how important these workers are to our daily lives. Understanding community helpers help us to become better citizens. 

At home try to identify a community helper within your neighborhood, school or even community!
