Heart Rate Webquest

Introduction

You hear it all the time—"get your heart rate up!" But what does that really mean? Knowing your heart rate zones can help you train smarter, improve your fitness, and avoid overtraining. In this WebQuest, you’ll explore how to monitor your heart rate, understand how it connects to physical performance, and apply it to your own personal fitness goals.

Task

Your mission is to become a heart rate training expert. You will:

  1. Research resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, and target heart rate zones.

  2. Calculate your own personal training zone.

  3. Track your heart rate during different levels of activity.

  4. Analyze your data and make a recommendation for improving cardiovascular fitness.

  5. Create a short presentation or infographic to share your results and findings.

Process

Step 1: Learn the Science

Read or watch the following:

Write down:

  • What is resting heart rate and why does it matter?

  • How do you find your max heart rate?

  • What are heart rate training zones and how do they help?

Step 2: Do the Math

  • Use the formula:

Max Heart Rate = 220 - your age

Target Zone = 60–85% of your max heart rate

  • Calculate and record your personal target zone.

Step 3: Test It Out

Pick 3 physical activities (low, medium, and high intensity).

Examples: walking, bodyweight circuit, running, jump rope, biking.

Before, during, and after each, measure your heart rate using a smartwatch, fitness tracker, or pulse check method (15 seconds x 4).

Record your results in a chart.

Step 4: Analyze & Reflect

Answer these questions:

  • Which activity raised your heart rate the most?

  • Did you reach your target zone?

  • What would you change in your workouts to stay in your zone more often?

Step 5: Share Your Learning

Create a Google Slide, Canva poster, or short video with:

  • What heart rate zones are and why they matter

  • Your personal heart rate data

  • What you learned and how this will help you train better

  • At least one fitness goal based on your data
