The Magical World of Photosynthesis

Introduction

Photosynethis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar. This process occurs in plants and some algae (Kingdom Protista). Plants need only light energy, CO2, and H2O to make sugar. The process of photosynthesis takes place in the chlorplasts specifically using cholorphyll the green pigment involved in photosynthesis.

Conclusion

"Photosynthesis is the process in which light energy is used to raise electrons in chlorophyll to a higher energy level (energise them) which are then passed on to an electron carrier system that extracts this energy and uses it to produce ATP molecules. In another process light energised electrons from chlorophyll are passed to NADP+ to produce NADPH. The electrons lost from chlorophyll in both processes above are replaced by electrons from water producing oxygen in doing so. The ATP and NADPH so produced are used to reduce carbon dioxide to the three carbon sugar glycerate 3-phosphate, G3P, which is subsequently used to make the six carbon sugar glucose.
