Guardians of Nature: Designing a Community Conservation Plan

Introduction

Have you ever noticed changes in your surroundings? Maybe streams that used to be clean are now polluted, trees are being cut down, or you see fewer birds and butterflies than before? Our local ecosystems are home to countless plants and animals, but they face many threats like pollution, deforestation, and improper waste disposal.

In this WebQuest, you will take on the role of young environmentalists. Your mission is to study how ecosystems work, identify problems in your own community, and create a practical plan to protect and restore nature. Are you ready to become a guardian of our planet?

Task

Work in groups of 4 members to complete this mission. By the end of this activity, your group must produce:

1. A written Community Conservation Plan

2. A creative infographic or short slide presentation to share your ideas

3. A list of simple, doable actions that families and schools can follow

Your output must answer these key questions:

- What is an ecosystem and why is it important?

- What are the top 3 environmental problems affecting your local area?

- How do these problems affect people, plants, and animals?

- What practical solutions can we do to solve these problems?

Process

Follow these steps to finish your task:

1. Step 1: Get Ready and Organize (1 day)

- Assign roles in your group: Researcher (gathers data), Writer (makes the plan), Designer (creates the infographic/slides), Presenter (leads the sharing)

- Discuss what you already know about ecosystems and list down things you want to learn

2. Step 2: Research and Explore (2 days)

- Use the websites listed in Resources to study what ecosystems are and what harms them

- Observe your own community: note down environmental issues you see (trash, dirty water, lack of trees, etc.)

- Look for examples of successful conservation projects that you can adapt

3. Step 3: Create Your Outputs (2 days)

- Write your Conservation Plan: include the problem, its effects, and your proposed solutions

- Design your infographic or presentation: make it clear, attractive, and easy to understand

- Prepare your list of action steps for the community

4. Step 4: Review and Practice (1 day)

- Check if all information is correct and all requirements are complete

- Practice your presentation so everyone in the group can participate

- Ask your teacher for suggestions to improve your work

5. Step 5: Present and Share (1 day)

- Present your plan to the class

- Listen to other groups’ ideas and give positive feedback

Evaluation

Your work will be graded based on this rubric:

Table

Criteria Excellent (4 pts) Good (3 pts) Satisfactory (2 pts) Needs Improvement (1 pt)

Content Knowledge All information is correct, detailed and well explained Most information is correct, few minor gaps Some information is incorrect or unclear Many errors and missing facts

Completeness All parts of the task are completed and all questions are answered Most requirements are met Some parts are missing Output is incomplete

Practicality of Plan Solutions are realistic, doable and suited to the community Solutions are good but can be more specific Solutions are too general or hard to implement Solutions are not relevant

Creativity & Presentation Output is very creative, neat, attractive and easy to understand Output is neat and presentable Output is simple and readable Messy and hard to understand

Teamwork All members contributed and participated well Most members participated Some members did most of the work Little cooperation

Conclusion

Great job! You have learned how ecosystems work and how we can protect them. Through this activity, you realized that even small actions can make a big difference in saving our environment.

Reflect on what you learned: What was the most important thing you discovered? How can you apply these ideas in your own daily life? Remember, taking care of nature is everyone’s responsibility – start small, start today!
