Fitness Benefits and the power of Team Work

Introduction

Students: This webquest wants to help you learn about fitness and why fitness is vitally important to you having fun and being healthy. Think about all the fun things you like to do. Running, riding your bike, playing football, cricket, soccer and tennis are fun activities that have a range of benefits, including the fact that they help improve fitness. Work in groups of 5 that your teacher has arranged so you can help and teach each other about the benfits of fitness. This webquest will also help you to understand the importance of team work when building your fitness. Click on the task button and you will see what you can discover about fitness. This is a great way for your students to learn about the potential benefits of fitness and why it is vitally important to their health. It is also a really positve way to learn about fitness because students will enjoy the fun challenges they need to complete throughout this webquest. Students will be able to work together which will help in forming a strong bond throughout the class.

Task

Students: ok now the real fun begins guys and girls. There are several elements to the benefits of fitness. working in groups of 4 or 5, we want you to find out what is a healthy heart rate for a person your age? What is a good heart rate for an olympic long distance runner? What is the benefit of having a low heart rate? What is an unhealthy heart rate for a person your age? Does exercise help put you in a good mood? Does regular exercise help prevent diseases? What helps increase fitness? Make a fitness regime for you and your group.

Research your questions through the linked websites in the process section. This information will enable you and your class mates to  understand the benefits of fitness, why you should regularly exercise and have a plan to improve your fitness. This task will also make it possible for you to potentially help friends and family to move out of an unhealthy lifestyle into a rewarding and fun lifestyle.

Bonus question: What are the benefits of running with a group compared to running by yourself?

Teachers: This lesson is ideal for grade 5 and 6 students. It covers ACPMP064 and ACPMP067 from the sub strand of understanding movement and learning through movement of Physical Education in the Australian Curriculum (ACARA, 2013). These questions could be used to for an assignment across a few different lessons or be used just for one lesson.

To learn more on fitness you could study professional athletes and their training regimes, and the benefits of a healthy diet.
