Greek Mythology and the Odyssey Webquest- Creating an Epic

Introduction

For the past two weeks, you have been reading "The Odyssey" by Homer. You have learned about the Greek culture as well as about epic form and epic heroes from this classical literature.. For this webquest, you will be asked to utilize this knowledge along with knowledge from other curricular areas to complete a cumulative project that shows your mastery in these areas. You will need to use the resources given, along with your own creativity to create a new hero who will travel through his (or her) own classical epic.

Process

***Any and all published work must be shared with me on Google Classroom under the "Create Your Own Epic" assignment. Have only ONE person from your group submit your work. Your work must have ALL your group members names on it for everyone to receive credit. Please only turn in ONE document with all tasks in order. For any links, make sure I can access them by setting your shared settings to share with me at mbeemer@g.wvusd.k12.ca.us and mbeemer@wvusd.k12.ca.us.

See links from Task #1 to help you on this. You can also always look to ProQuest for help with your research! Make sure you do not just copy and paste; if you quote something, you must have quotation marks and an appropriate source!

Task #5:

Use the following documents to help you plan out your epic. You must complete two storyboards. I have included examples of what yours should look like. I will understand if they are not as graphically ornate.

Please make a copy of each document and  share the link under task #5 on your final document. Make sure that your settings on your document are set to share with mbeemer@g.wvusd.k12.ca.us and mbeemer@wvusd.k12.ca.us!!!

Task #6: Using the elements of an epic, create a new epic for your epic hero. Make sure that your epic follows epic form and has all the elements given to you on your epic notes and that you used on your storyboard. Also, make sure you include Greek cultural values somehow in your epic. Your epic should be an abbreviated epic, and should be no longer than two pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font. You should view the rubric to make sure you have included all required elements; you do not want to lost unnecessary points!

This interactive link will show you the important parts of a hero's journey. It is similar to your graphic organizer, but feel free to check it out: http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/herosjourney/heros_journey.html

Task #7: Write a summary of the cultural values found in your epic and explain how (if at all) your epic would have to change if it were to show our societies' contemporary values. This summary should be no longer than two paragraphs. If your epic is already set in contemporary times, compare and contrast the values found in your epic that are important to our culture with those of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Task #8: Use the following links to view some everyday products that have ties to mythology. Discuss among your group members why these products might be tied to the myths they are related to. Then create your own product for your epic hero to advertise. Your product should have something directly to do with your epic hero, or your the values he/she represented. The advertisement you create can be a video, poster, or something of your own choosing, however it should be creative and should be obvious as to why you chose the product you did for your hero to advertise.

Evaluation
Conclusion

At the end of this project, you should have an comprehensive understanding about what an epic is, and how classical literature (yeah literature!) such as epics and myths show us the values of classical Greek culture (yeah anthropology!). You should also have a much better grasp on certain areas of mythology as you have done in depth research on certain characters. You will comprehend the impact of Greek mythology on ancient pieces of art as well as contemporary types of artistic persuasion such as advertisement (yeah visual art!), and will have reviewed genetics (yeah science!) as well as the history (yeah history!) of the Greek culture. You will have also gotten another chance to practice your creative thinking and technology skills (yeah innovation and technology!).
