The Great Tidal Mystery

Introduction

Are you ready to solve a global oceanic mystery?

​Imagine you are a team of marine scientists stationed at coastal stations around the world. Every day, the ocean water rises up the shore and then retreats, like clockwork. But on certain days of the month, the high tides are extremely intense, while on other days, the tide barely shifts at all! Local coastal communities are asking for your help to understand why the ocean behaves this way so they can prepare for storm surges and plan safe navigation for boats.

​In this WebQuest, your team will investigate how the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun interact with Earth to create high tides, low tides, spring tides, and neap tides.

Task

Your team’s mission is to act as a Marine Science Advisory Panel and produce a Coastal Advisory Infographic / Digital Presentation for coastal residents.

Your final deliverable must include:

  1. ​A clear explanation (with diagrams) showing how gravity creates two tidal bulges on Earth.
  2. ​A comparison chart showing the differences in alignment between Spring Tides and Neap Tides.
  3. ​A real-world prediction using live tide data to inform a local fishing community of the best days for tidal activities.

Process

Students will work in groups of 3. Each student will take on a specialized role:

​Role 1: The Gravitational Physicist – Focuses on explaining the force of gravity between Earth, the Moon, and the Sun and how it pulls ocean water into bulges.

​Role 2: The Lunar Phase Specialist – Focuses on how the Moon’s monthly cycle (New Moon, Full Moon, Quarter Moons) aligns with Spring and Neap tides.

​Role 3: The Coastal Data Analyst – Focuses on interpreting real tide charts, analyzing daily high/low tide cycles, and creating practical safety advice.

​Step-by-Step Instructions:

​Explore Individual Roles: Use the curated links in the Resources section to research your specific role. Take notes on key definitions (gravitational pull, bulge, high/low tide, spring/neap tide).

​Collaborate: Meet back with your 3-person team to share your research. Synthesize your answers to answer: How do the Sun and Moon work together or against each other during different phases?

​Analyze Data: Access NOAA’s real-time tide tracker link to select a coastal station and identify the current tide pattern.

​Create the Product: Using Canva, Google Slides, or paper, design your group’s 1-page Coastal Advisory Infographic.
