The Great Salt Pond of St. Martin Then and Now

Introduction

My Webquest will be on, The Great Salt Pond of St. Martin Then and Now. The Great Salt Pond was the main source of income for the Island of St. Martin for over 300 years. This source is no longer in existence. The students will do their research on a given topic to discover what the salt pond was like then and what it has become now. The purpose of this activity is to make the students more aware of the only resource that was in St, Maarten / St. Martin, “The Great Salt Pond”, and what has become of it now, and also how well, the teams can work together in fulfilling their given task.

Task

The class will be divided into five groups of five to six, where each group will be given the responsibility to do their researching on a selected topic. The given topics will be, The History of the Great Salt Pond, where were the three salt ponds located? Who were the works in the salt industry and how was it being processed? What are the artifacts that remain from the salt production? And what has become of the great salt pond now?  Resources will include their textbook, the internet, websites, articles, pictures and any other resources that can assist the group contributing to the final product.

Resources

Here are the resources (materials) that you will need to complete this task:

  • Textbook
  • Internet and the websites
  • Articles
  • Pictures and any other resources that can assist the group contributing to the final product.

Process

Let’s get started

The groups will be determined by a random selection, each group will have an identifying number, that number will determine which group goes first when presenting. Since there are five questions to be answered, and there are five groups, one person from each group will select a question from the question box that will be provided by the teacher, and that question will be their research topic.

Once the groups pick their questions they are ready to begin.

Here are the steps that you will take in completing your part of the assignment. The different groups will be given a question base on the topic, they will research their topic, after which make a report.
