Introduction

The Great Gatsby is a tale taking place during the roaring 20's that follows the love affair of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. The book focuses a large amount on the aspects of the 1920's including the extravagant parties, prohibition, stock market crash and the types of cars they drove. While reading, there is never any question in the reader's head as to what time period the book is being placed in.

Task

The Great Task

For this project I want you to think about the setting, focusing on the time period the book is written in. You will create a power point that will be shared in front of the whole class one week from today. In this power point you will pick an era different from the 1920's to have the book set in. Each presentation has a 5 minute cap, meaning that your presentation MUST be under 5 minutes, yes we will actually be keeping track of the time. You will pick one chapter from The Great Gatsby to focus your contrast on and go completely off of that. In the power point you must explain why placing the novel in a different era could potentially make the book different and tell us how it could be the same.

Process

Process

1.) Reread a chapter in the book that you wish to focus your comparison on. (Do not just choose the shortest chapter to reread, but a chapter that will help your power point the most.)

2.)Research the roaring 20's. What made this decade so special? How does it pertain to the book?

3.) Research the different era you wish to use apart from the 1920's. There must be at least a 20 year age difference from when the 1920's were. What is so different about this era compared to the 1920's? Fashion? Technology? Morals? Religion? ect.

4.) Create the power point you wish to show the class.

  • First slide must have Name, bell and the new era you are choosing
  • Give a quick recap of the chapter you are explaining, say why you chose the chapter.
  • Give at least 5 compare and contrast examples but also tell us WHY you think this time change would do this to the book (this should take up most of your time in your presentation).
  •  Your final slide should be a works cited slide with all of your sources, including where you got your pictures from.

5.) On the day you present I expect you to hand me an outline of your power point so that I can follow along with it as you present.

Evaluation

Evaluation

While you are presenting I will grade you 1-4 (one being the lowest and four being the best)

  Content Time Creativity Professionalism
1 Student clearly copy and pasted from the internet 0-1 minutes Seems the student did the presentation the night before Student did not take presentation seriously at all
2 Student did the bare minimum with little research done 1-2:30 minutes A few pictures here and there but no real thought put into the presentation Student did not look at the class and was hard to understand while talking. Student was also distracted by the class
3 Research was clearly done but still not at the level that it should have been 2:30-4 minutes and or over 5 minutes Thought was put into the project but not enough to take it to the next level Student was soft spoken and did not make enough eye contact with the class while presenting
4 Student used strong sources and gave their own ideas as well 4-5 Minutes Presentation was intriguing and full of examples and, explanations Student stood tall in front of the class while making eye contact and did not get distracted by classmates

Conclusion

Conclusion

Yes, you did it!

From this project I hope that you learned some new things about both the 1920's and the other era that you chose to research.

The main goal of this project was to get you thinking about the importance of setting. I hope that this taught you to look deeper into the books that you are reading and think about the setting. The setting is so important to literature and even changing the setting by 20 years can have quite in the impact.

I chose this project for my students to do to help them with a couple of things

  • Setting- Having the students put the book into a different perspective really makes them think about how important the setting is to any story
  • Timed power point- This is a useful idea because it 1.) cuts down on some students rambling on a topic. 2.) helps them stay more organized because it is less on their power points they have to work with. 3.) The students will think that the presentation is easier knowing how much time they have to present.
