Grammar: Conditional Sentences

Introduction

Welcome, this WebQuest will be your guide in learning about conditional sentences. What is Conditional Sentences? What are the Different Types of Conditional Sentences?

Task

Your task is to write sentences using appropriate conditional verb forms and answer the given sentences.

Process

Conditional sentences are statements discussing known factors or hypothetical situations and their consequences. Complete conditional sentences contain a conditional clause (often referred to as the if-clause) and the consequence.

  • It’s important to use the correct structure for each of these different conditional sentences because they express varying meanings.

  • Pay attention to verb tense when using different conditional modes.

  • Use a comma after the if-clause when the if-clause precedes the main clause.

There are three types of conditional sentence.

1. First Type (Type 1)  True in the present or future. It reveals to events that are expected to occur in the future and are likely to occur.

2. Second Type (Type 2) - Untrue (contraty to fact) in the Present/Future. It states that the expected events occur now but it didn't happen

3. Third Type (Type 3) - Untrue in the past. It states that the expected events occured in the past, but it didn't happen.
