Introduction
Welcome to Miss Tshaka's Webquest
Please find the attached video and go through it will orientate you about what you are going to come across in this WebQuest
Task
TASK: ESSAY
TOPIC: Spermatogenesis and Semen transportation
MARKS : Content 17+Synthesis 3=20
Due Date: 10 Sept 2021
Submission Method: Email present on the Teachers page
Sperm is produced, transported, and then combined with secretions from the accessory glands to form semen. The semen is then transferred into the body of the female where it meets the ovum.
Describe all the processes referred to in the statement above and explain THREE structural adaptations of the sperm for fertilization.
Process
Please go through the notes provided for more clearity on Spermatogenesis, also watch the videos attached
Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid spermatozoa develop from germ cells in the seminiferous tubules of the testis
The process of germ cell development during spermatogenesis can be divided into five successive stages:
(1) spermatogonia,
(2) primary spermatocytes,
(3) secondary spermatocytes,
(4) spermatids, and
(5) spermatozoa.
Sperm Transporation
The testes are where sperm are manufactured in the scrotum. The epididymis is a tortuously coiled structure topping the testis, and it receives immature sperm from the testis and stores it for several days. When ejaculation occurs, sperm is forcefully expelled from the tail of the epididymis into the deferent duct. Sperm then travels through the deferent duct up the spermatic cord into the pelvic cavity, over the ureter to the prostate behind the bladder. Here, the vas deferens join with the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct, which passes through the prostate and empties into the urethra. When ejaculation occurs, rhythmic muscle movements propel the sperm forward.
