Grade Four: Fisher River Cree Nation; Social Studies

Introduction

This month students will locate Fisher River, Manitoba in Canada and resources that are available there for them. Learn keywords and traditional knowledge interrelated throughout the assignments. 

Task

1. Look over multiple maps of Canada, pinpoint Manitoba then Fisher River. Look for Lakes and Rivers surrounding Fisher River; then community and resources around Fisher River.

2. The Seven Sacred Laws in relation to Fisher River; medicines used and found in the area. 

3. Natural Resources and Community supports. 

4. Create a class display or mini diorama on what you learned, either group and/or individual

 

Process

Use maps, google earth and geocache app to look over Canada, Manitoba, then Fisher River and everything surrounding. Find keywords.  

Research the Seven Scared Laws and the medicine wheel, and research medicines used/found in and around Fisher River. Do definitions and keywords; also what they are used for. 

Research natural resources and manmade resources around Fisher River. Research and/or visit some of the community support places in Fisher River

Use various types of paper, paper mache, cardboard to create our own display(s) on Fisher River.  

Evaluation

1. Each Definition and keyword will be worth 1 mark. (10 per task;3 main tasks=30 points)

2. Each student will relay what they know and remember about Fisher River and history they have learned.(10 points)

3. Each student will locate on a map/globe/google map where Fisher River is located.(10 points)

4. Display and/or Diorama. (50 points)

Conclusion

By the end of this unit we will be able to answer questions and definitions pertaining to Fisher River Cree Nation.
