Introduction
Hello Grade 9’s. Today’s lesson will be based on verbs. At this stage it is imperative and it is expected of you to understand what verbs are. You should also know that there are various types of verbs.
However, today we’ll be specifically focusing on Transitive and Intransitive verbs. You are required to listen to my short lesson below defining Transitive and Intransitive verbs.

Grade 9’s, for today’s exercise you are required to determine if the verbs in the following sentences are transitive or intransitive. If transitive, indicate the object of the verb.
1. Some ants fight.
2. The explosion sank the ship.
3. He spoke the truth.
4. He spoke loudly.
5. Boil the water.
6.The motorman stopped the train.
7. The horse kicked the boy.
8. The sun rises in the morning.
9. The watchman blew his whistle.
10. The poor widow killed herself.
11. He took shelter under a tree.
12. The birds sang sweetly.
13. The fire burns brightly.

Process
Transitive and Intransitive Verbs
First things first, before you fully comprehend Transitive and Intransitive verbs, you have to be able to identify a subject, verb and an object in a sentence.
Listen to the video below.
In English Language typology, subject–verb–object (SVO) is a sentence structure where the subject comes first, the verb second, and the object third.
Example:
Chuma is eating pizza at a restaurant.
Chuma - Subject
Eating - Verb
Pizza at a restaurant - Object
Now that you understand the Subject-Verb-Object sentence structure, let’s get straight back into transitive and Intransitive verbs.
Transitive verbs have an object
- E.g. Mary kicks the ball
Mary - Subject
Kicks - Verb
The ball - Object
Intransitive verbs do not have an object
- E.g. The children play
The children - Subject
Play - Verb
(There is no object in this sentence, meaning it is a intransitive verb)
Listen to the video below to understand transitive and Intransitive verbs even further in order for you to be able to complete the exercise.
