  • -To answer our guiding question, “What does it mean to be healthy?”

Lesson Success Criteria:

  • -We can identify daily, positive food choices
  • -We can understand what a balanced diet looks every day
Task

YOUR TASK!

You will be in groups of 3s for this webquest.

In your group, you will research the 6 main nutrients, what foods they are found in and how they can prevent a variety of health disorders (e.g., cancer, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, food allergies and anaphylaxis, tooth decay, osteoporosis). Each member of your group will research TWO nutrients.

Your group's final task will be to submit a google slide presentation. Here is an example of what a Level 3 template looks like:

Minimum 13 slides.

The group can create:

Slide 1 - title slide (be creative!) / with student names

Student 1 does slide 2 and 3

Slide 2 - first nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

Slide 3 - second nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

Student 2 does slide 4 and 5

Slide 4 - third nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

Slide 5 - fourth nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

Student 3 does slide 6 and 7

Slide 6 - fifth nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

Slide 7 - sixth nutrient / what foods is it found in?, What health disorder(s) can this nutrient prevent?

The group can create:

Slides 8 - What does a healthy breakfast look like? What foods from the different food groups could you be eating?

Slides 9 - What does a healthy lunch look like? What foods from the different food groups could you be eating?

Slide 10 - What does a healthy dinner look like? What foods from the different food groups could you be eating?

Slide 11 - What healthy snacks could you choose to eat, instead of processed foods?

Slide 12 - end slide (be creative with appropriate memes / gifs, make sure the theme is healthy eating!)

Slide 13 - works cited section - Urls of where you found your online information? Urls of where you found your online pictures / gifs, etc.

What are some other ideas that you could add to your presentation / slideshow to bump it up into a higher level? Check the google classroom post / reference chart about "what more can you add" to go above and beyond the basic instructions to enhance your work.

Process

Step 1: Review the latest Canadian Food guide and check out the different food choices. These ideas will help you with slides 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 of your slideshow.

Step 2: In your assigned groups, you will have three, 100 min blocks to complete your research and to create your google slides. Make sure you are being productive with your time. Stay on task.

Step 3:

The group will create a google slides slide show (13 slides minimum). Please go back to the task section of the webquest (looks at the tabs above and click on "TASK") to follow the slideshow criteria and to ensure that you have all the information that is needed.

Please also go to the google classroom (main section) and look at the post with the success criteria on how to create grade appropriate google slides and the different criteria (colourful, creative, organized and eye catching!) to give you more ideas.

Step 4:

  • Groups will be asked to present their google slideshow to the class. The whole group presentation should not be more than 10 minutes. Please refer to the google classroom post with the reference chart / success criteria on presentation skills
  • Each student will be asked to present their own research and part of the slideshow.
  • Make sure the rest of the slideshow to be presented is split up evenly with the other members BEFORE you present. Plan ahead, be organized. I will be asking your group about how you have divided the presentation time before we start presentations.

Conclusion

YAY! You finished your webquest! Celebrate with a silent cheer in your group!

You should now have a good understanding of healthy eating / nutrition and how to maintain a healthy eating lifestyle, along with daily physical activity!

REMEMBER: By understanding the 6 major nutrients and the foods that they are in, this knowledge will help your body grow and develop, while helping you to feel great!

Canada’s Food Guide recommends being mindful of your eating, eating meals with others, and taking time to enjoy your food. Regularly eating healthy foods gives you the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you need to be healthy. An unhealthy eating pattern is one

of the many factors, including obesity, physical inactivity, and high blood pressure, that can increase the risk of illness and disease.

(From the Grade 7 Health curriculum teacher prompt, pg 257 - 258)

When the Webquest is completed, please fill out the Self-Assessment “Eating Patterns and Habits” google form in the Health section posting of the Google Classroom. With this self -assessment, you will be asked to rate your knowledge and understanding of healthy eating patterns and eating habits, and how to establish and maintain a healthy eating pattern every day.
