The forward defence is one of the most commonly used shots in cricket.
The Prime Objective of playing a forward defence shot is to block the ball than to score runs. But there can be opportunities to score from this shot, if the shot is particularly well timed, or if the batsmen run a quick single.
Played to a good length ball, the batsman attempts to defend his wicket by smothering the ball before it has an opportunity to spin or move off the seam. With a well-bent front knee, the shot can also help combat variable bounce.

The Grip of a cricket bat
- Lay the bat on the ground.
- Make a ‘V’ shape defined by the thumb and forefinger of both hands. Hold your hands in front of you, palms down. Your fingers on both hands should be grouped together, but for your thumbs, which extend to the sides to form the ‘V’ shape. The ‘V’s should be upside down – i.e. open end towards the ground. Maintain this ‘V’ shape as you reach for the bat
- Line up your grip with the spine of the bat. As you grip the handle, keep your two ‘V’s facing downward (towards the bat handle), so that the inflection point of the ‘V’s (where the base of your thumb and forefinger meet) on both hands is in line with the spine along the backside of the bat blade.
- Keep a distance of about two fingers between your hands. The closer you place your hands, the more power and less control you have. Moving them further apart will give you more control at the expense of power

How to play the forward defensive stroke.
- Take backswing and step forward with front leg to make a comfortable stride towards the pitch of the ball
- Establish a strong, well balanced and relaxed base/stance, over the leg which has stepped out towards pitch of ball and you should have a bent front knee.
- Bring your bat down to ball using your top hand to control the movement, speed and direction of the bat. Slow down your bat speed into contact with the ball and keep your top elbow high.
- Aim to contact the ball under your eyes and play the ball with the full face of the bat. Always remember to play the shot with your bat against your front leg so that there is no gap between the two which the ball could pass through.
