Grade 6 Ashman Social Studies Web quest on the Map of Jamaica

Introduction

              Hello Everyone and welcome to the grade 6 Ashman Social Studies Web quest .  This platform will provide students with a rich wealth of knowledge, practice, experience and the integration of technology; we explore the  topic "Map of Jamaica", showing the parishes, capitals and the counties. 

              Students  will be able to incorporate various technological or digital tools to enhance the teaching and learning process as well as sharpening learners technological  skills; being creative in a student centre classroom environment.  Moreover, this web quest will provide our learners with the guided performance task based, the process or steps to achieve the goals of the lesson. 

               In addition to this, students will have the materials needed to participate in the web quest activity. These materials include you tube where students will have access to the video presentation on the Map of Jamaica, demonstrating the drawing skills to construct the island of Jamaica. Students will then have a blank map of Jamaica to examine the parish borders. Let's all get ourselves ready to explore the parishes and capitals of this beautiful island of Jamaica.

Task

Learners, please read the instruction below in order to complete the task below. 

Task: 

A group of grade six (6) students  are exploring the topic "Map of Jamaica" depicting the parishes and capitals.   You are to use the blank sheet given, use the video presentation to construct the the map of Jamaica , insert correctly the parishes and capitals of Jamaica, develop a key to show the parishes and capitals with their counties, using a symbol to denote each category.  Your key must be easily understood and work must have a title and border. 

Process

Students to complete the performance based task, you are to apply the following steps below:

  1. Watch the video provided by clicking on the link.  This will guide you in drawing the map of Jamaica.
  2. Write your title
  3. Using the HB-2 pencil give, draw the map of Jamaica within your page border
  4. Use rugged lines to divide the map into parish borders based on the video and or picture displayed. 
  5. Correctly insert the parishes in their order. 
  6. Insert the parishes along the rugged line.  
  7. Select a symbol of your choice to identify the parishes and capitals 
  8. Select any three colors ( from the crayon tray) to color showing the counties
Evaluation

In order to asses this task, students you are to mindful of the following rubric to be graded fairly: 

Content:     1.A well developed or detailed  thematic map of Jamaica with all the required steps  inserted correctly.  (5 marks)

                    2. A fairly developed  map of Jamaica showing showing limited information to depict the steps (3 marks)

                    3.  Some key points were listed and steps were not fully accounted. (2 marks)

 

Creativity:  1. The integration of the digital tools to draw and label the map of Jamaica to denote the required steps required to paint a

                       picture of the map of Jamaica. ( 3 marks)

                  2.   Use limited resources to capture and integrate digital tools to depict the map of Jamaica to display the steps given.

                         (2 marks)

                  3.   Use one of no digital tools or limit a steps to complete the task. (1 mark)

 

Grammar:    1. Well constructed sentences, phrases and correct use of words and diction    (4 marks)

                      2. Limited use of the English and correct spelling of words. (2 marks)

                     3.  Major grammar errors and poor use of the English  (0.5marks)

 

Total marks :   12 marks

 

Conclusion

           In order to make this lesson a success, it takes the effort of each learner in the student centred classroom.   Students will be applauded for their invaluable participation and application of the digital tools, using their initiative to create, apply critical thinking skills, active participation and takes the lead to explain then demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained. Moreover, develop a vast wealth of knowledge of the Map of Jamaica: parishes and capitals, identifying the counties and inserting the elements of a map. 

           Learners of course will be able to education their peers and even external learners on the skills and content garner about Jamaica and its map. Students will develop or better yet sharpen their technological skills advancing in the 21st century classroom.  Should will also be able to improve their research skills and improve their methodology in capturing or grasping information to complete comprehended question in a project based or performance based.

      Hello everyone! I am Danion Ashman, grade 6 teacher at the Clonmel Primary and Infant School.  I am a trained graduate of the Caribbean Maritime University where I possess the Bachelor of Science degree in Immigration. Currently, I am pursing my Post Grad Diploma In Education in Primary Education.   Moreover,  I am a classroom teacher for over 5 years teaching at the upper primary level; all discipline.    I live my the mantra  " Life is not about who you are, rather discovering who God created you to be." I enjoyed impacting lives, building and molding the minds for tomorrow's  future.   

        On a lighter note, I hail in the beautiful parish of St, Mary, Jamaica West Indies. I am married to one wife with just one child. A trained mentor under the National Integrity Commission (N.I.A) with the training of Trainer programs.
