Grade 11 Life Sciences: Excretion

Introduction

Good morning  learners 😄! I hope that  you are doing  very well and hoping  that you are all safe from the pandemic  and practising  the  covid-19 regulations.

Today you will be doing  an Practical investigation  based on the topic that we have covered ( Excretory system in Humans). You will have to study  a human excretory  system model and answer  questions  that will follow.

A model and a video will be provided  for you guys just to remind  you  guys a little bit of the topic.

Task

You are required to do a practical investigation on the Human excretory system. A model  and a video will be provided for you guys just to remind you guys a little bit of the topic that we have covered. You will be doing an on the various organs in the system  and answer the questions that will follow.

PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION

Structure of the Urinary System

What you need

  • Model of the human urinary system

What you should do

  1. Organise yourselves into groups of 3 (Consider and follow the regulations of the Covid-19 pandemic)
  2. Make a careful study of the of the following parts of the urinary system in the model:
  • Kidneys
  • Ureters
  • Bladder
  • Urethra

  1.  Identify the following structures associated with the urinary system in the model:
  • Aorta
  • Inferior vena cava
  • Renal arteries
  • Renal veins
  • Adrenal glands

  1. Write down the functions of the kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, renal artery and renal vein after you have discussed them with other members in the group.

  1. Beside the kidneys, name two other  organs of the excretory system.

MARKING GUIDE OF THE PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION

STRUCTURE OF THE URINARY SYSTEM

What you need

  •  Model of the human urinary system

What you should do

  • Organize yourselves in groups of 3. Consider the covid-19 regulations
  • Wear your mask
  • Practice social- distancing, 1,5 distance apart
  • Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds or use 70 % sanitizer
  • Be safe

  •  Learners are making a careful study of the following parts of the urinary system in the model which are:
  • Kidney
  • Ureters
  • Bladder
  • Urethra

As part of the covid-19 regulations, there is a bottle of hand sanitizer in each of the working station. So as learners sanitize after 10 minutes and the teacher is monitoring the stations so as to make sure that regulations are followed in trying to fight the spread of the corona virus.

As leaners are making careful study of the model individually as they are 1,5 meter apart. So after each learner is done studying the model, the model is sanitized and given to the other member of the group.

  • Learners are identifying structures associated with the urinary system in the model. Each leaner is given a chance and get to discover those structures and identify them.

  • Possible answers (Discussions of the functions)

Kidney- The kidneys are a pair of bean- shaped organs in the abdominal cavity on either side of the midline, just below the diaphragm. The right kidney is usually lower than the left kidney. The renal artery, renal vein and ureter are attached to the kidney at its hilum. The hilum occurs on the concave, medical side of the kidney.

Ureters- Are a pair of duct which carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Each of ureter begins within each kidney as a kidney as a widened portion, the pelvis.

Bladder- Is a muscular sac which stores urine temporally. It can hold up to 600ml of urine.

Urethra- Is a tube which carries urine from the bladder to the exterior. In the male, the urethra, which runs through the penis, carries urine as well as semen. In the female, the urethra and vagina opens separately.

Renal artery- Carries blood laden with nitrogenous waste to the kidney.

Renal vein- Carries blood with very little nitrogenous waste away from the kidneys.

5.

  • Skin
  • Lungs

Conclusion

The purpose of doing the task was to make sure that learners  get to understand and relate to organs that they have in their own bodies as well as understand the excretory system . The response was very positive as now they  get to learn  what really happens in their  bodie as their everyday life. The excretory system was understood very well. 😀☺

As a teacher i believe  in learning  through  experience. For me it was not a difficult  topic to teach the leaners because i knew  that my learners  arw going  to  relate to the topic as it closely related to them  and they were  able to  make sense to some of the sub- headings  as they have the excretory system to themselves. We should teach learners  knowledge not  scientific  knowledge.
