Introduction
Welcome Grade 10's
Today we'll be dealing with conversions of measurement. To get you kicked off to great start for the upcoming exams as well as setting the foundation for the on coming grades.
What will you gain from this topic:
●the ability to convert one unit to another
● the ability to convert different units such as Distance - km,m,cm,mm
E.g. 1km to m (×1000)
= 1000m
Use the link below to get more insight of the topic we are busy with.
Task
The most basic rule of converting is;
- if you convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you must multiply
- if you convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, you must devide
1. Know the difference between Distance and Lenght
Distance; we refer to distance when we work with longer dimensions.
Lenght; is the term we use for shorter dimensions.
2. Measuring, reading and approximating lenght
Shorter lenghts can be measured using a ruler.
3. Estimating lenght: "rule of thumb" methods
Ways in which can be estimated the lenght of one metre
● a long step or jump is nearly equal to one metre
● the distance from your finger tips, along your outstretched arm to your shoulder, is about one metre
4. Calculating with lenght and distance
When working with measurement in real life it is often necessary to add or subtract lenghts, and even to mutiply amd devide them.
Process
Two cupboards need to be placed side by side in Shane's room. The one cupboard measures 59,6cm and the other one 428mm.
1. What will their combined width be if placed side by side?
2. How much space will be left if the space available for them measures 1.32m?
3. Which cupboard is bigger?
Evaluation
1. Combined width 59,6cm + 42,8cm = 102,4cm
2. First convert 1,32m to cm(multiply by 100)
Space availble = 132,0cm - 102,4cm= 29,6cm
3. First place the units in the same unit e.g. if one is in km and the other one in m we need to make the same units both need to be in km or m.
1st cupboard 59,6cm
2nd cupboard 428mm (devide by 10)
428mm ÷ 10
= 42,8cm
1st cupboard is bigger then the second one.
Marking allocations
1. - 2 marks
2. - 4 marks
3. - 4 marks
Total : 10 marks
Conclusion
Congratulations ..!!
You have completed the first section of Conversions of Measurement. Once you've gone through the videos as well as completing the exercises you are set of to a great start.
Your foundation has now been set for dealing with Converions of Measurement and are prepared for the upcoming topics we'll be dealing with.
You now have the skills to convert from one unit to another as well as being able to convert with other units. Such as Mass and Volume, which will be our next topic continuing with conversions of measurement.

I chose this topic for today's lesson as learners need to gain the skills now in grade 10 already to be able to convert different units. As it will be a chapter that they will continue using now from grade 10 up until grade 12 with Mathematical Literacy. Their foundations needs to be set now already. And what a great way for using Webquest as today we dealing with technology.
Technology has become part of our daily lives especially with this on going pandemic ways need to be brought to make education easier and accessible. Learners can always return to this site if they are unclear about some parts within the lesson or topic.
