Task

Taiwan bunun dancer

This is Ting-wei, she has recently arrived in Australia and will live here for some time.

Australia's system of governance is very different to what Ting-wei is used to and she has lots of questions about the way things are done here. To help her out, your group of friends have offered to improve your own knowledge through some web-based research, in the hopes you will be able to answer all her questions.

By following the steps of this webquest, you will gather the information you need to answer all Ting-wei's questions (see page ___ in your booklet).

Process

Process One

Firstly, Ting-wei wants to know a little bit about our history, she is very interested in why Australia is broken up into different states and how these different states became a nation. Watch this video to help you answer questions 1 & 2:

Process Two

Ting-wei is confused by the different levels of government we have in Australia, which is understandable - so are most Australians! Check out this QLD Government fact sheet which will help you explain levels of governance in Australia (see questions 2 & 4).

Process Three

Finally Ting-wei would like to know what all this means to her. She is living in Yeronga, QLD, find out which local ward, state electorate, and federal electorate she is in. Once you have done so, you will need to use Google to find out who is the current member. As you gather this information, record it in the visual organiser to complete question 5 of the webquest section of your workbook.

Evaluation

Use this rubric to evaluate your success in this webquest:

Exceptional (3pts) Good  (2pts) Needs Work (1pts) Score
Use of web pages I followed every link and successfully navigated each website, despite the challenges some of them presented. I followed every link. Some of these websites were challenging, but I persisted and found most of the information I needed. I did not follow every link and/or I found little of the information I needed from the websites.
Completion of Tasks I completed every question using full sentences to provide information which would be highly useful to a new arrival to Australia. I completed most questions using full sentences and the information I provided would be useful for a new arrival to Australia. I completed some of the questions with information that would be somewhat useful to a new arrival to Australia.

Conclusion

Well done!

You have completed the webquest and helped someone who is new to Australia understand the way it is governed - hopefully you have learned something new yourself. Please record these findings in question 6 of the webquest.

If you still have time before the end of the lesson, begin drafting a brochure for other recent arrivals to Australia, so they can quickly understand the complexities of how this nation runs.
