Introduction
In this webquest, you will create a magazine supplement for a school newsletter that focuses on the importance of healthy eating. The magazine will be called “Healthy Choices Magazine.”
Eating healthy food is very important because it helps us stay energetic, fit, and healthy. A balanced diet can improve our growth, concentration, and daily performance while also helping to prevent health problems. Choosing nutritious food such as fruits, vegetables, and healthy drinks can encourage a better lifestyle for everyone.
Throughout this webquest, you will work together in groups to explore information about healthy food, balanced meals, and good eating habits. After gathering your information, you will use your ideas to produce a digital magazine that encourages others to practise healthier eating habits.
Task
You are a group of Health Reporters who will produce a magazine supplement about healthy eating called “Healthy Choices Magazine.”
To complete Healthy Choices Magazine, you will work in groups of 3 and carry out the following tasks:
Select two suitable topics related to healthy eating for each of these categories:
○ Balanced Diet
○ Fruits and Vegetables
○ Healthy Drinks
○ Junk Food
-
Prepare and present a short summary of your selected topics to the Editorial Board. They will help your group choose the best topic for each category.
-
Write short and informative articles about your final topics and add suitable pictures or graphics.
-
Organise, edit, and complete your digital magazine.
-
Present your magazine to the other groups in class.
-
Complete a self-evaluation questionnaire based on your contribution and teamwork.
Process
Process 1: Researching Halal Street Food Stories
-
Think about street foods you know. Make a list of three famous halal street foods you have tried or heard of, and compare with a partner.
-
Work in groups of 3. Search for halal-certified street food stories from sites like CNN Travel, BBC Food, or HalalZilla.
-
Your 'The Halal Foodie' magazine is going to have the following categories:
-
Savoury & Spicy (e.g., Kebab, Tteokbokki).
-
Sweet Treats (e.g., Baklava, Churros).
-
Unique Drinks (e.g., Teh Tarik, Turkish Coffee).
-
-
Choose two famous halal street foods for each category.
Process 2: Food summaries to the Editorial Board
-
Assign each of your group members a letter - Student A, Student B or Student C. Prepare a short summary of each of the food choices:
-
Student A: Savoury & Spicy.
-
Student B: Sweet Treats.
-
Student C: Unique Drinks.
-
-
Tips for your summary:
-
Your summary should be short - between 100 and 120 words.
-
Include one photo from the Internet to illustrate your summary.
-
Include at least three adjectives (e.g., succulent, aromatic, zesty).
-
-
The Editorial Board is going to ask you extra questions about your food story - make sure you know more than what you put in the summary.
-
Practice your presentations a couple of times out loud with your group, trying to make it as interesting as possible.
-
Useful language for your presentation:
-
"This article is about...".
-
"One of the most famous street foods is...".
-
"We think this food is important because...".
-
-
Present your summaries to the Editorial Board. (The Editorial Board is another group in the class - you too will act as the Editorial Board to another group) .
-
Tips for the Editorial Board:
-
Is the story newsworthy and interesting?
-
Is the summary clear, and is the language used accurate enough?
-
Are there any pictures presented with the summary and could they be used in the final magazine?
-
Overall, have you chosen a good range of stories for this group's magazine?
-
Process 3: Producing 'The Halal Foodie' magazine: writing articles
-
You are now going to produce the magazine, with one food story approved by the Editorial Board for each of the categories.
-
Use your summary as a base but add more details (ingredients, history, location). Try to write about 200 to 250 words per article.
-
Read the articles written by the other members of your group. Give each other feedback on:
-
Content: Is the article clear? Do we know exactly what the food is, where it is from, and its history?
-
Structure: Does the article have clear paragraphs, and is it well-structured?
-
Language: Is the use of English as correct as possible? Are the tenses and vocabulary appropriate?
-
-
Rewrite and correct your own articles as needed.
-
Decide on what photos or illustrations you would like to use, and where you would like them to appear in the articles.
Process 4: Producing 'The Halal Foodie' magazine: editing and publishing
-
As the editing team, you now need to put your separate articles together into one digital magazine. You will need to discuss the following issues with your group:
-
What will the cover look like? What photos/illustrations will you use?
-
What order will you put the articles in?
-
What 'look' will the articles have?
-
-
Use Canva or Google Sites to put all articles together into one magazine.
-
Put all the digital magazines up (or share the links) around the class. Walk round and look at the other groups' magazines. Were there any images or foods that appeared in more than one magazine?
Evaluation
