Global Awareness- Poverty

Introduction

Participate in Poverty Awareness Month – Sisters of Saint Francis of the Neumann Communities

As you can see from the image above, poverty is a huge issue. As many of you well know, it definitely doesn't just impact those in America. Poverty can be a huge issue in some of our ELL students because some of them come to the states for a new beginning. Poverty is such a large issue, January is even Poverty Awareness month.

Task

In this Webquest, I will try to bring awareness to the global issue of poverty. I will also be addressing how this impacts ELL students.

Process

Poverty is a very serious thing, that can definitely impact many aspects of students' life and education.  Concern Worldwide US states on RTL, "Just over 588 million people are living in extreme poverty, meaning that approximately 7.7% of the global population lives below the international poverty line of $1.90 per day. Put another way, 588 million people presently have a lack of basic assets and/or do not see a return on the assets they have. For most people, this forms a cycle of poverty…” Poverty can impact their health from aspects such as lack of nutrition to lack of shelter. According to the National Council of Disabilities, "In 2014, 9.3 percent of all public school students were English learners and approximately 20 percent of children were from families living in poverty." Many migrants try to come to America to escape the poverty that they face in their home countries, but sometimes poverty follows them. Many also come to America to ensure their children's education, and although all students have the right to an education. Due to poverty, it can be difficult for students to focus due to lack of food, have difficulty with transportation to school, they may be fun of due to what they wear or the backpacks that they carry. These social barriers can also impact their growth in the English language. They can be limited to resources due lack of funds for things such as computers or translation apps. Much of these days is very focused on technology and that can also cause some issues with individuals for families of lower-income. I believe that we are making more steps towards education for all students including those with a lower income. Unfortunately many look down upon many individuals from other countries and believe that they are bringing poverty to the United States and that they are stealing our jobs. I believe those from different countries can bring some diversity and new opportunities to America. Many of those who come to America face oppression due to different cultures and sometimes due to the amount of money that they make.

Evaluation

For the evaluation portion of this Webquest, I want to put some of the ways that we may be able to inform our students on how to help.  This can be a difficult topic to talk about, but it is a very important conversation that you may need to have with some of your students. This subject may come up in books, social studies, and maybe even math when you are learning about money.

  • Raising money
  • Giving some of their toys to less fortunate children.
  • Raising awareness.
  • Can food drives.
  • Helping some of their ELL classmates with their English.

Conclusion

So we know that poverty can impact the students and their families, but there is also poverty in the school. As teachers, we will face hard times and some difficult situations, but we need to be there for our students. So how can we help our students, we could have some snacks or extra supplies in the class, keep an eye on our students that may be bullied, and promote kindness and selflessness in the classroom.
