Introduction
Konichiwa! (That's Japanese for 'Hello')

My name is Hiro and I need your help...It seems that in my old age I have lost my memory!
I have forgotten the ways of my people, my traditions and culture and need some help to remember it...
Traditions and culture are very important to me because I need to pass them on to my grandchildren so they too can remember for generations to come.
I have heard you are studying Ancient to Modern Japan! I know you can you help me!
I need to know "What it was like living in Ancient Japan".....
All I have left is this picture....Perhaps it will give you some clues! I hope it is helpful.
Good luck!
Sayounara (Goodbye)
Discussion: What does this image tell us about Japanese culture?
Task
Your task for this week is to help Hiro remember aspects of Ancient Japanese culture by creating a brochure informing him of at least four of the below listed cultural aspects;
- Art
- Visual art
- Theatre
- Music
- Martial Arts
- Crafts (Origami, Calligraphy)
- Food
- Dress (Clothing)
Reasearch: What is this ancient art form? Why is it significant to Japanese Culture?
Process
This is what our week will look like....
Monday: Before you begin, you are to create a mind map with the inquiry question, what is culture?' Use a mind-map (provided in class by me) to work with a partner to come up with a definition. Below is an example. Write the definition you come up with in the centre and then the elements around it! You may like to use illustrations. This will help you with your brochure. The below link has some information that may assist you.

Tuesday: This lesson will be dedicated to research for your brochure and creating a layout using Microsoft Word (in class demonstration). You should have chosen the four (or more) topics you will be researching. I would suggest no more than 5 topics as they will not fit in the document. You must remember to write down where you have got your information for your bibliography!
How to create a brochure in Microsoft Word: To create your 'culture' brochure, use Microsoft Word and select 'brochure' under document type. Use this format to insert pictures and information. Your brochure must contain;
What should my brochure contain?
- A Title page (You may like to choose a interesting title)
- Concise Information (Information must be put in your own words (paraphrased) Avoid using long-winded direct quotes. Remember you have limited space- USE relevant information)
- Pictures (No more than 4 pictures to illustrate)
- Bibliography (Remember to source your information)
Wednesday: This lesson is another research lesson. Use your time wisely. You will need to be starting to put your information into your brochure. Remember, this information must be written in your own words. By the end of this lesson it is expected that you are half way to completing your brochure. You may need to catch up at home if you are not quite there.
Thursday: Formatting and adding Images. At the completion of this lesson it is expected that all information is complete and typed into your word document. I will demonstrate to you how to add images and reference them in your bibliography.
Friday: Bibliography. I will again demonstrate how to source your information in a bibliography. You should have written down the sources for your information. This lesson will be for finishing your final products! I bet they will look fantastic!
