Westward Expansion

Introduction

During most of the 19th century, citizens of the United States decided to move west. They were called pioneers and traveled along uncharted trails. The hardships were many but so were the rewards.This was the time of the Westward Expansion.

Task

You will explore what it was like for the pioneers to make the trip west. You will keep a journal of the experiences along the way. Lastly you will write a letter describing the journey and what was discovered out west.

Process

You will be broken up into five groups and each group will research what it was like for the pioneers to reach the west coast, what was life like on such a long journey, what hardships were encountered and what were the benefits of the trip. Each group will be assigned to explore one of five different trails the pioneers took to get out west. You will record the information in a journal.  

Evaluation

Students will be able to identify what aspect of that time compared to present day. 

They will be able to explain what the westward expansion was like in their own words. 

Conclusion

The students will share their ideas of the pioneers experience of going west, the positive and negative aspects of the journey.
