Introduction

Cinderella is a story told all around the world. Disney's version may be the most popular, but did you know that this version is not the only one? Depending on where you are around the world, the story, the characters, and the settings all change. By researching the different versions of Cinderella, students will become more culturally aware of the stories, how they vary all around the world, and the countries from which they come... So, let's get going!
Welcome: Cinderella Around the World
Description: This is a webquest that will help students learn about the story of Cinderella and the variations of this story depending on the culture from which it is derived as well as the country from which it originates.
Grade Level: 5
Subject: English / Language Arts
Keywords: Cinderella, culture, variation, country
Author: Erin Gilbert
Task

Today you will be researching online the story of Cinderella as told by Disney and by another culture. The finished product will be a comparison paper that includes similarities and differences between the stories and facts about the country from which the story comes. Then, you will share your findings with the class in 1 of 3 ways (they are listed in the Conclusion section).
Your paper is to be 3-4 pages long with:
- An introduction paragraph that has a hook to grab the readers' attention
- 3 or 4 paragraphs with content you found about the 2 stories and the country of the other story (including at least 6 facts about that country)
- A conclusion paragraph that restates the main points of the body of your paper
You may include graphics within your paper to help illustrate your point, but if you do include graphics then your paper must be at least 5 pages long.
Process

1. Because Disney's version of Cinderella is so popular, we will begin here. With a partner, use the internet to look for summaries of this story if you are not familiar with it.
2. Once you have the summary of Disney's version, I want you to research the other titles of stories similar to Cinderella. Choose one title that you want to use to compare to the Disney story.
3. Find the book's summary, or find the actual book online to read.
4. Use the Venn diagram page a gave you to compare and constrast the stories and to keep your ideas about the two stories straight.
5. Then research the country and/or culture that the story comes from to find interesting facts.
6. Type the differences and similarities of the stories and the facts about the country that you found into a Word Document. Don't forget a title page & reference page!
7. You will submit your final product into the classroom Dropbox.
8. Complete the presentation tool you will use to present to the class.
9. Have fun and learn!

For My Diverse Learners...
Students who are above average should create a video presentation of their findings to present to the class in addition to the requirements. Also, their papers should include at least 10 facts about the country of origin for the variation they choose, while the others should have at least 6.
Students who struggle should include pictures to demonstrate what they are trying to say in their paper. They may also create a poster board in addition to their papers to help illustrate their findings. Students who struggle can also have a copy of the physical book to look at the pictures in the story to more easily relate them to the Disney version.
ELL students are allowed to choose a version of Cinderella in their native language, even if it is not listed in the Credits section for the different websites of others. They are permitted to use more pictures in their papers to help illustrate what they are trying to say.
