The Geographicality of The Great Gatsby

Welcome to New York City! This is the place where the richest of rich live, especially in the 1920s. So, naturally, all the places to live would be high quality, right? Throughout this virtual exploration, we will determine the significance of the East Egg and the West Egg neighborhoods on Long Island and find out why they were separated by Old Money and New Money.

Using examples from the book and outside research, you and two other classmates will create a shoe box diorama of what you think your mansion would like in the 1920s. You will have to choose whether to live in the West Egg (New Money) neighborhood or the East Egg (Old Money) neighborhood. Be sure to include a one-page summary of why you chose that neighborhood. Also, be prepared to give a 5-minute maximum presentation of your diorama.

The students will use their creativity to replicate what their house would look like in 1920s New York City. This will require teamwork, an understanding of the architecture and geography of New York City, and writing and speaking skills as the students should write a one-page summary and present their diorama to the class. 

Remember, the reasoning behind your choice of neighborhood can be fantasized and also remember to have fun!
