Introduction

Hello and Welcome to the World of Gemology!

Today in this activity, you will learn about the geological process that creates Gemstones and how to identify some basic Gems.

If you do not know what a Gemstone is, the Webster dictionary defines a Gemstone as: a mineral or petrified material that when cut and polished can be used in jewelry. Examples: Diamond, Opal, Sapphire, etc.

Go to the next section to learn more about your activity today, and HAVE FUN!

Task

1. Correctly match gemstones. Write the answers down on a piece of paper. RESEARCH IS ESSENTIAL!!

 

3. After look up information on sapphires! Your job is to primarily be able to identify the gemstone and have an understanding on how they are formed. You will watch a video that will instruct you on how it is formed. TAKE NOTES!!

 

4. Once everything is completed you will create a presentation on how your gemstone is formed.  BE PREPARED YOU WILL PRESENT TO THE WHOLE CLASS. You will be given 5 minutes to present so make it clear and simple. You can add as many pictures as you'd like.

Next, you will be researching sapphires!

While watching this video on how Gemstones are formed, pay close attention to your specific Gemstone.

WRITE NOTES ON HOW YOUR GEMSTONE IS FORMED!

Then, after the video is done, write a rough draft of how your Gemstone is formed.

Once you have all your information written on your rough draft, you will create a presentation on how your Gemstone is formed and present it to the class! Your teacher should have a poster board and markers or you can create a slide deck.
