Fundamental Concepts of Cell Biology

Introduction

Cell biology is the study of the cell structure and it's function. It revolves around the concept that cell is the fundamental unit of life. It is the cell that made up the tissues and eventually the animals. However, some organisms have only one cell, while others are organized into cooperative groups with huge numbers of cells.

It was on 1830s that the discipline was originated though scientists had been using microscopes for centuries, But they were not always sure what they were looking at. Robert Hooke, one of the pioneer of cell biology paved the way of the discipline in an initial observations of plant-cell walls in slices of cork during 1665 and it was followed eventually by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek wherein he gave his first descriptions of live cells with visibly moving parts.

In the 1830s two scientists who were colleagues, observed deeply the cells. Schleiden (observation at plant cells) and Schwann on the other hand to animal cells. They provided the first clearly stated definition of the cell and proposed the cell theory. In the cell theory, they stated that that all living creatures, both simple and complex, are made out of one or more cells, and the cell is the structural and functional unit of life.

For us to be able to dig deeper about cell biology, this webquest enables students to know more about the fundamentals of cell biology.

At the end of this webquest, the students will be able to elaborate the relationship between molecular structure and it's functions, the dynamic character of cellular organelles and the mechanisms that regulate cellular activities.

Task

For you to be able to accomplish this webquest, there are activities you need to accomplish :

A. Make an essay or reflection paper with not more than 500 words. The link as reference is provided but you can find more reference if you want. It will be more substantial and informative.

B. Make a Cell model illustrating cell structures in plants and animals.

C. Create your own website presenting the different molecular structure of the cell and it's functions.

D. Draw, diagram or make a poster of at least one cellular activity and explain it's processes through a video presentation together with the output presentation.

This will help you explore and appreciate more the discipline cell biology.

Expect for more activities to come. Hope you enjoy😊.

Process

A. Answer the questions briefly with not more than 500 words. You can use other reference aside from the given. However, cite the reference at the end of your output (the reference is not included to the 500 word limit as well as the name and questions).

1. What are the molecular structure of the cells and it's functions?

(For questions 2 to 4 you can use this link https://press.rebus.community/introductorychemistry/chapter/molecular-structure-and-polarity/ )

2. Predict the structures of small molecules using valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory.

3. Explain the concepts of polar covalent bonds and molecular polarity

4.Assess the polarity of a molecule based on its bonding and structure

5. What are the different  cell organelles and it's functions?

C. Social media nowadays is very influential as it reaches millions of people or the so called netizens. In order to present the molecular structure of the cell and it's functions, make a website presenting the necessary information gather from the activity A. You can find different medium to create your own website. Feel free to chose among them and be creative as you design your own website.

These are the criterias to be follow:

Criteria for the website:

Good luck and Enjoy!

Conclusion

Recently, Cell biology continuously improving and advancing.  The fundamentals of the discipline enables the students to have enough background for further improvement and development. However, this might take time but the evolution of information that the researchers and scientists are going it will be nearly realized. This course enable the students to be more connected to cell biology as it is the basic component of life and the humanities in general.
