Materials Needed:
- Tablet or Chromebook
Objective: You will learn to distinguish the three branches of government between their functions and who is in charge of them.
Task
In this introduction of the three branches of government, you will have a refresher of what you may have learned in the past. When we complete the lesson over the three branches of government you will be able to identify and explain the functions of each branch.
You will be placed into groups to do a discussion as a class to demonstrate the different branches of government.
A video will be shown over the three branches of government. You will go on Kahoot to do a game using a tablet or Chromebook to go up against your classmates. You know... some friendly competition.
Process
We will have a class discussion which will be us demonstrating the functions of government as the leaders in each branch.
- I will assign you into one of three groups. You will participate in a class discussion using the knowledge you may or may not have learned in previous years.
- In one round, students in one group will be responsible for introducing bills. Another group will decide to approve or not approve the bills and the last group will review them.
- Group 1 will be the legislative branch
- Group 2 will be the executive branch
- Group 3 will be the judicial branch
- As a class in round 2, we will discuss in-depth what each group of students demonstrated and how this represented a branch.
- Questions that will be asked: In each group, who were the students representing? How does the job of the students in the group represent a branch?
We will watch a short video by BrainPop to get a visual and auditory understanding of the three branches of government.
After watching the video we will do a quick game of Kahoot. You need to use your first and last name to play the game. You will have 20 seconds to answer each of the 10 questions. 5 students with the highest scores will receive a reward! So read the questions carefully!
