Introduction
This will allow a participant to improve on a very valued skill in the game of basketball. Shooting a Free Throw attempt. The word free does not mean that it is a easy skill at all. Which often means one has to be properly instructed on how to execute said skill. With correct instructions and practice, over time, the skill will definitely see improvement. Lets dive into the methods and instructions that will help to improve Free Throw shooting!
Task
The task is very simple. Get a regulation sized basketball and head to your nearest court. Find the free throw mark on the court and step up to it. With the process instructions you have been given, attempt a free throw. As a beginner, your number of tries can remain small. A number like 10, 20 or 30 can help you to become familiar with the processes associated with shooting a free throw. As you spend more time on the court going through the phases of instruction, you are poised to improved. As you improve, your number of attempts should increase. So now the numbers look like 50,100, 150 and even 200 tries. This means that you are becoming more adept at your craft. In order to remain at the top, you must continue practicing. This is the only way to improve on your skills.
Process
- Get your body in position. If you are right handed, your right foot should be lined up with the rim. Your shoulders should be square and you should feel balanced - being off balanced will affect your control.
- Make sure to keep your eyes on the front of the rim before you shot and while you shoot.
- Keep your shooting arm parallel to the rim when you shoot the ball.
- Bend your knees! The strength of your shot should come from your legs rather than your arms.
- Shoot the ball off your finger tips. If you are using your palm, your shot will be flat and not get good arc.
- Make sure to follow through with your shot! This will help you get arc, rotation, and consistency.
Evaluation
To really understand where improvement has been achieved with this skill, one must perform the skill and record progress. As being at 20 attempts. Make a note of different days and how many attempts were successful in comparison to what attempts were failures. As the successful numbers improve. It is safe to say your skill is improving. When this improvement becomes a constant fixture, it is a good idea to increase your number of attempts. While continuing to make your notes and record the numbers. Comparison of form is good. So finding a professional player and watching his mechanics can help to improve your mechanics over time. Copying certain techniques does not hurt your attempt to improve over time and with practice.
Finally video analysis of yourself is a good way to achieve improved mechanics. Seeing what you are doing helps for making adjustments or keeping the good mechanics. All of these are tools of evaluation that make way for improvement in mechanics and advancement in the skill.
