2. Photo and Image Editing Tools

Image editing encompasses the processes of altering images, whether they are digital photographs, traditional photo-chemical photographs, or illustrations. Traditional analog image editing is known as photo retouching, using tools such as an airbrush to modify photographs or editing illustrations with any traditional art mediumGraphic software programs, which can be broadly grouped into vector graphics editorsraster graphics editors, and 3D modelers, are the primary tools with which a user may manipulate, enhance, and transform images. Many image editing programs are also used to render or create computer art from scratch.

Photo Editing Basics

  • Crop your images and clean them up.
  • Adjust white balance.
  • Adjust exposure and contrast.
  • Adjust color vibrancy and saturation.
  • Sharpen images.
  • Finalize and share.

Image Editing Tools

Image editing in Manifold uses several controls at once to achieve exactly the desired effect. To edit the image, we can choose: PicMonkey and Snappa

2.1 PicMonkey PicMonkey is another helpful tool to use when it comes to image editing. If you aren’t a graphic designer but want crystal clear images with high production value, PicMonkey is one of your best bets.

This tool has a slew of diverse features that extend a bit beyond the capabilities of Canva. For example, you can edit existing images that you have on Facebook, your computer, or anywhere else:

Features:

  pasted image 0 1997pasted image 0 2001pasted image 0 1949

You can also touch up specific photos with new effects. And, just like Canva, you can easily start a new design from scratch or with a preset template. To get started, click “Start a free trial” and create your free account: You can set up your new account with an email or by signing up directly with Facebook: You can set up your new account with an email or by signing up directly with Facebook: Once you’ve created a free trial account, you should be directed back to the dashboard to edit content: One of the best benefits of PicMonkey, when compared to Canva, is the actual photo editing ability. For example, Canva focuses more on social media and content marketing images. But PicMonkey allows you to use diverse filters that you’d find in an expensive application like Photoshop. For example, you can edit things like filters, sharpening, and blurring: You can even tap into more advanced photo editing tools and skills like curves and levels: On top of that, you can touch up real-life photos of yourself or your company using awesome image editing tools: The options for portrait photo editing are great and allow you to perfect any headshot for your social media or team photo for your website. On top of that, you can add tons of cool overlays to your content, as well: For example, if you wanted to add emojis in your picture, simply click the “PicMoji” option and click any emoji to instantly add it: You can also pick from a bunch of different existing themes and templates if you are lacking inspiration or creativity: PicMonkey is similar to Canva but lacks the diverse template and preset options that Canva has. What it lacks in templates, though, it makes up for in diverse image editing capabilities. Canva doesn’t allow you to edit things like curves and levels or touch up portrait-style photos. PicMonkey is a great tool for the everyday person who needs detailed image editing but doesn’t want to get bogged down by advanced, technical programs. If you want to create a beautiful photo in just a few minutes that is less focused on text and templates, this should be your go-to tool.

2. 2.     Snappa Snappa for image editing. Snappa is similar to Canva in the fact that it has countless, high-quality templates to start from. Snappa is similar to Canva in the fact that it has countless, high-quality templates to start from. The features are the countless free stock photos and high-quality icons. They are some of the best free icons I have ever seen. Canva offers icons, but most of the top-quality ones cost money. And one of the best features that Snappa has to offer is the social media scheduling tool. Features are:

pasted image 0 2034pasted image 0 2018

You can share your graphics directly from Snappa in seconds, saving you the time it takes to download and schedule on a different tool. You can even use the tool to resize existing images, which is a lifesaver when it comes to repurposing content for different platforms. To start creating your graphics in just a few minutes, click “Create My Graphic Now” on the homepage. Sign up for a free account and head to your dashboard to get started. Here, you can start to create an image based on custom dimensions. Or simply choose from common template sizes meant for various platforms. One of my favorite uses for Snappa is the diverse selection they have for social media and PPC ads. It’s probably the best image editing tool with the most options when it comes to creating high-quality ads in just minutes. You don’t need to pay a designer outrageous prices for a few banner ads anymore. Snappa allows you to do it in minutes. Got a new idea for an ad on Facebook? Don’t wait 48 hours for your designer to make it. Once you’ve picked out your desired template size, you can start to choose from a bunch of free options. After selecting your template, you can start to customize just about everything on it. You can add high-quality background images or icons for free. But the best part about Snappa’s editing tool is the free, high-quality icons. These icons are what you’d expect from a professional graphic designer and they are all available for your use. They have just about anything you can think of, from social media to emoji-style icons. If you have a particular icon graphic in mind, you can simply search in the bar above to narrow down your results. They have just about anything you can think of when it comes to icons. And the free, photographer-quality stock photos are endless. Snappa is an awesome tool if you love to use icons or stock photos in your work. If you like instant social scheduling, Snappa has that, too. Simply hit “Share” in the top-right corner and you can connect social media accounts and even send content to Buffer for scheduling. Take advantage of the diverse, free offerings from Snappa if you want images that make you look like a professional designer.

3. SURVEY AND POLLS TOOLS

The poll is a way of knowing people’s choices and understanding what works for them. Polls can help you to measure the success of any event or initiative and are carried out at various stages. The interval at which polls are conducted depends on what kind of data needs to be extracted from the respondents. The Polls tool allows instructors to post single question multiple-choice survey questions on their site. Polls can be structured to elicit single or multiple responses to a question.

Results of a poll can be made available to students immediately, after voting, after the closing date, or never. Instructors can post any number of polls. If desired, the instructor may also change the tool permissions to allow students to post poll questions. Participants may only vote once per poll. Responses to poll questions are anonymous. A survey gathers information from a set of people, to generalize the results to a larger population. Surveys provide a significant source of data and insights for almost everyone in the information business, from government and private organizations to media and academic institutions.

Online surveys consist of different types of questions such as single choice, multiple-choice, and open-ended text. When the online surveys were new in the market, it was more or less a text or choice-based questionnaire, but with the growing use of multimedia over the internet, you can include graphical, matrix, and audio/video questions as well. The responses are gathered through the email, website, QR code, or survey mobile app.

Once the responses are collected, you can run different data analytics algorithms and generate meaningful insights in the form of reports. These reports can also be exported in the most commonly used formats such as .xls, .pdf, or .ppt.

3.1. Google Forms

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RO1Vx_RSTLY/Wpcftd8-sxI/AAAAAAAA6TI/wVciq8Md7pQKWhdurMO1Txb-_9pcLpjOQCLcBGAs/s1600/1.pngGoogle Forms is free online software that allows you to create surveys, quizzes, and. It's part of Google's web-based apps suite, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and more. It's a versatile tool that can be used for various applications, from gathering RSVPs for an event to creating a pop quiz.

You'll need a Google account to create a Google Form, but you can adjust the settings so that anyone can fill it out, meaning no Google account is required.

How to set up and customize Google Forms

Google Forms differentiates itself from similar online software through its library of customization options. When creating your new form, you'll have the ability to select from a series of templates or design your very own. If you choose to make a new template, consider adding your logo and photos, and watch Google generate a custom color set to match.

With the Q&A format at the heart of Google Forms, the Workspace tool offers various question and response options, including multiple-choice, dropdown, and linear scale. And with each new question, you can integrate multimedia like images or YouTube videos or add text descriptions that offer hints or expound on your question.

In the General tab, you can check boxes like "Collect email addresses," which will make entering an email address a requirement to submit the form — or let respondents submit anonymously. In the Presentation tab, you can click boxes to include a progress bar, shuffle the order of the questions, and set a custom confirmation message that respondents will receive upon submitting the Form. In the Quizzes tab, you can turn your form into a quiz.

You can get even more sophisticated by using logic jumps that take users to different sections of the form depending on their answers. This is a great way to ask follow-up questions tied to specific answers. Using logic jumps can help users navigate through longer surveys more quickly and only answer pertinent questions.

Organizational features let you determine the order of your queries through a drag and drop tool or randomize the answer order for specific questions through the form's settings. Another way to organize your form is through the Google Forms section tool. These can be helpful for longer surveys, as they break questions up into manageable chunks. To create a section, click the Add section icon (two vertically stacked rectangles) on the right toolbar. It's located on the same toolbar as the "+" for adding a question.

Once you're ready to share your Google Form, clicking the Send button at the top right of the screen. will let you send the Form via email, copy a link, or copy an embedded HTML code to add the form to your website or blog.

Assessment tools are techniques used to measure a student's academic abilities, skills, and/or fluency in a given subject or to measure one's progress toward academic proficiency in a specific subject area. Assessments can be either formal or informal.  Informal assessments are often inference an educator draws as a function of unsystematic observations of a student’s performance in the subject matter under consideration. Formal assessments are objective measurements of a student’s abilities, skills, and fluency using screening, progress monitoring, diagnosis, or evaluation. Both types of assessments are important; however, only formal assessments are research, or evidence-based.

For assessment, we can choose: Assessment Using Concept Tests and Assessment by Portfolio.

7. 1. Assessment Using Concept Tests

ConcepTests are conceptual multiple-choice questions that focus on one key concept of an instructor's learning goals for a lesson. When coupled with student interaction through peer instruction, ConcepTests represent a rapid method of formative assessment of student understanding. ConcepTests are products of a teaching strategy known as peer instruction that was initially developed to provide a mechanism for introducing effective active learning strategies into physics lecture classes without having to make acute changes to course content or organization (Mazur, 1997 ).

Why Use ConcepTests?

The use of concepts has proved successful in enhancing student learning, improving student satisfaction with the course and/or instructor, and increasing student attendance. Further, the teaching strategies used in the implementation of ConcepTests and peer instruction mirror the principles of good practice in undergraduate education.

Learn more about why ConcepTests are effective

How to Use ConcepTests

Peer instruction introduces the use of conceptual multiple-choice questions, ConcepTests, that are initially analyzed by students working alone, and then in a pair or a small group. The effective use of ConcepTests follows a simple five-step protocol that can be readily shortened by instructors to meet the needs of their specific classes. Instructors should also give some thought to how ConcepTests will be assessed in class. We recommend some formative assessment strategies that encourage participation and attendance in a low-stakes learning environment. ConcepTests can be used with or without electronic response systems ("clickers").

How to Write ConcepTests

Questions that seek to probe a student's comprehension or application of a concept often make ideal ConcepTests. Comprehension might involve predicting what would happen in an experiment or how changing one variable would affect others. Application often involves applying rules or principles to new situations or using known procedures to solve problems. Questions that ask students to solve a problem using a known equation or to select a procedure to complete a new task would be considered application questions.

7.2. Assessment by Portfolio

What are Portfolios?

Portfolios are personalized long-term documentation of student mastery of course material. One essential element of portfolios is student reflection on their own learning and progression towards the mastery of the material documented in the portfolio. As such, portfolios are windows on the metacognitive process of students. (from William Slattery's Assessment site)

Developing Portfolios to Assess Student Learning

Metacognition is an awareness of one's own thought processes. As such, it involves an almost simultaneous, conscious degree of self-awareness. "This is how I approach or think about a situation"; "this is how I might best approach this particular concept to more fully understand it"; "this is how I am thinking about this issue and it is or is not effective"; "these are other possible approaches I might take instead" (Courts and McInerney, 1993 p.57)

Portfolios Defined

Portfolios are personalized long-term documentation of student mastery of course material. An essential element of portfolios is student reflections on their own learning and progression towards the mastery of the material documented in the portfolio. As such, portfolios are windows on the metacognitive process of students.

Types of Portfolios

To be useful as assessment tools, the portfolio should include entries that demonstrate a progression of student understandings and ultimately mastery of the concepts. Huba and Freed (2000) identify two different portfolio types.

  • All-Inclusive Portfolios contain a complete record of all work done by a student in a course or program.
  • Selection Portfolios that are focused on documenting the achievement of mastery of specific course goals/objectives set by the course instructor.

Assessment Using Portfolios

Because portfolios are by their nature long-term records of students’ progress and achievement they can be used to assess programs, courses, or projects. Although the aspect of long-term change in student content knowledge and metacognition may not be as marked when portfolios are used to assess courses, the process of portfolio development tends to focus students on deciding what the essential elements of learning are and what samples of their work best display these elements. In Chapter 5 of [Palomba and Banta, 1999] they discuss three critical elements of student portfolios in promoting and supporting student learning. These are:

  • Student involvement in the selection of entries
  • Student preparation of written reflections about learning
  • Continuing discussion with faculty regarding written reflections
