Grade 5 Social Studies Webquest: Heritage and Identity: First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada

Introduction

Welcome to your Social Studies Webquest! 

You will have the opportunity to research and think critically about some advantages and disadvantages of European colonization from the perspective of different groups.

You will conduct research and create a newspaper to publish your findings. You will investigate the perspective of both the First Nations and the Europeans.

Big Ideas and Questions:

In what ways did First Nations people and Europeans benefit eachother in New France?

Were they harmed at all by trade interactions?

In groups of 2 you will investigate positive and negative consequences of interactions between one of the First Nations and one of the settler communities in New France.You will create a front page for an editorial newspaper from the perspectives of one of the First Nations, and one of the European community members in New France. Samuel de Champlain

Task 1

Watch the following presentation to get your minds engaged. 

In groups of 2 research and investigate the positive and negative consequences of interactions between one of the First Nations (Plains, Eastern Woodlands etc) and one of the settler communities in New France (French, British).

Task 2:

You will be writing 2 editorial articles, one from the perspective of each group you have chosen.  Review the key features of an editorial here. Each group member will select one perspective.  You may use this template to draft your ideas, or a Google Doc which you will share with me.

5.  When you are finished your page, select "Save as Final" and save it to your drives with an appropriate title.

Task 3

This part is to be completed independently.  You will write a reflection paragraph that includes the advantages to both the First Nations AND the Europeans as a result of trade interaction.  Be sure to make meaningful and insightful statements about how this interaction benefited both groups.  Write your reflection on a Google Doc and share with me.  You may find this template helpful to review proper paragraph structure.
