Flower Life Cycle By Carrie Miller

Introduction

Good afternoon, 3rd grade botanist!

What is a botanist? A botanist is a scientist who studies plants.  This week the whole class will be plant scientist as we study the life cycle of a flower.

This week we will begin with our Flower Journal.  This is a where you need to keep all of our handouts, drawings and notes that you will be given that will help you with our quiz at the end of the week.

By the end of the week you will know these learning objectives:

  • I know the stages of a plant life cycle
  • I can name the parts of a plant
  • I can explain how a flower changes as it goes through its life cycle
Task
Our Week
Monday, May 7th
Tuesday, May 8th
  • Read Exploring Flowers by Kristin Sterling and Plants Can't Sit Still by Rebecca E. Hirsch.  As we area reading, pay attention to facts that you may not have known that you can add to your Power Point creation
  • Work on Adapting Plant Life worksheets for your flower journal.
  • These worksheets are due Thursday, May 10th. http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/strategies/adapting-plant-life-cycle-worksheet
Wednesday, May 9th
  • Continue to work on Adapting Plan Life worksheets.
  • Start making a plan for your Power Point creation.
  • Our Power Point creations are due Friday May 11th
  • Computer Lab time to work on Power Point creation
Thursday, May 10th
Friday, May 11th
  • Power Point Creation Presentations
  • Quiz on Life Cycle of a Plant and Labeling a Plant
  • Quizzes and Flower Journal are due by the end of the today May 11th
Process

As Botanist you are going to use your scientific knowledge and vocabulary to keep a log in your Flower Journal about how a flower grows and the parts of a flower.  It's more than just a stem and petal!   Make sure to keep notes in your journal about the things we talk about.  You and a partner will use your notes to create a 3-4 Power Point creation to tell the class about what you have learned.

We will watch this video before we go to the computer lab to create your presentation.

Conclusion

Now you have learned that just like all living things, even a flower has a life cycle.  Through your PowerPoint creation you are able to describe that life cycle as well as tell us about the part of a flower.
