Florida State Park Project

Introduction

Blue Spring State Park is one of Florida's most important natural habitats and designated refuge for manatees. Every winter, hundred of manatees of manatees gather in its warm waters to survive.

However, human activity, pollution, and environmental changes are putting this fragile ecosystem at risk.

Guiding Questions:

  • Why is Blue Spring State Park important?
  • How do humans impact the park and its wildlife?
  • What can be done to protect manatees and their habitat?

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe ecosystem interactions (Understanding)
  • Analyze human environmental impact (Analysis)
  • Develop conservation strategies (Creation)
Task

You and your team are environmental consultants hired by the state of Florida.

Your mission:

Create a group narrated PowerPoint presentation proposing a plan to protect Blue Spring State Park and its manatee population.

Your presentation must include:

  • Description of the park and ecosystem
  • Importance of manatees
  • Environmental threats
  • Conservation solutions
  • Visual elements (maps, images, charts)
Process

Form Groups & Assign Roles

Each group member will take on a role:

  • Marine Biologist – Research manatees and aquatic life
  • Environmental Scientist – Study water quality and ecosystem health
  • Historian – Examine how human activity has changed the park
  • Conservation Planner – Develop protection strategies

Research

Use the following sources:

Focus your research on:

  • West Indian Manatee habitat and behavior
  • Water temperature and spring systems
  • Pollution and human impact

Analyze the Problem

As a group, discuss:

  • What are the biggest threats to manatees?
  • How do tourists impact the park?
  • Why is protecting freshwater springs important?

Create Your Solution

Design a conservation plan that includes:

  • Protecting manatee habitats
  • Reducing pollution
  • Managing tourism
  • Educating the public

Build Presentation

Create a narrated PowerPoint including:

  • Title slide
  • Overview of Blue Spring State Park
  • Key problems
  • Research findings
  • Proposed solutions
  • Final recommendations
Evaluation

Your project will be graded using this rubric:
