Finding out more about your team's animal! [Writing information reports]

Introduction

Dear Class 5A,

After learning what information reports look like and what language features they usually have, let us now work towards writing our very own information report in our teams of 4. The theme for our information report will be "Animals".

Before we can write our information report, I need every one of you to find out more about an animal of your team's choice...

Task

The Task

Goal:

  • To search for information on team's choice of animal
  • To consolidate the information you have gathered into a PDF document

How to do:

  1. In your teams of 4, decide on what animal you want to research on (this should be done face-to-face in school with your team members).

  2. Search for information on the chosen animal using sources such as websites, youtube, books and magazines.

  3. Keep in mind the 4 development strategies commonly used in information texts as taught in the previous lesson when doing your research:

    • Characteristics of the subject
    • Examples of the subject
    • Comparing and contrasting with other subjects
    • Components of the subject and their functions

  4. Using any note-taking software such as Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, put in your research materials, including any pictures and diagrams.

  5. Save your document in the PDF format for easy viewing during class using your ipad/tablet.

What is this used for:

  • Your research will be used to write an information report on your team's chosen animal after this activity
