Filipino traditions in San Pedro, Puerto Princesa Palawan

Introduction

To celebrate Filipino fiesta as one of Filipino traditions in San Pedro, Puerto Princesa Palawan, on March 27th, 2025, we will organize a program featuring traditional foods, music, dances, and games, or host a "Mano" (respectful greeting) workshop to teach about Filipino culture and values.

Task

Students will do the steps of the Tinikling dance.

The Purpose of the activity which is Tinikling dance is to present cultural expression and entertainment, celebrating the ingenuity and resilience of the Filipino people. 

 

 

Process

The class will be divided into 4 groups and will dance “Tinikling.

To dance Tinikling, two dancers hold long bamboo poles, tapping them rhythmically on the ground and against each other, while other dancers step over and between the poles in time with the music, using basic steps like tapping, basic, cross, turning, and slide. 

 

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the process:

  • Equipment:

Two pairs of long bamboo poles are used, held by two dancers who tap them against the ground and against each other in a coordinated pattern. 

  • The "Clappers":

Two dancers, often referred to as "clappers" or "tappers," hold the bamboo poles and move them in a sequence of "out, out, in". 

  • The Dancers:

One or more dancers move between the poles, hopping and stepping in time with the music and the movements of the bamboo poles. 

  • Rhythmic Movement:

The "clappers" tap the poles twice on the ground, then bring them together, creating a rhythmic pattern that the dancers must follow with their movements. 

  • Basic Steps:

Dancers use basic steps like the touch step, hop step, and waltz step to maneuver between the opening and closing bamboo sticks. 

  • Costumes:

Female dancers often wear a balintawak dress (a colorful dress with arched sleeves) or a patadyong (a checkered loose skirt), while male dancers may wear a camiso de chino shirt with rolled-up trousers. 

 

Evaluation

This activity will be assessed base on the following rubrics:

Choreography- Performance accurately reflect the steps and movements of the tinikling dance, including the banging of bamboo poles and the dancers movements over and between them.        
Rhythm and Timing- The movements synchronized with the music and the clapping of the bamboo poles.        
Movement quality-The movements fluid, graceful, and dynamic, reflecting the energy and spirit of the dance.        
Coordination- The dancers maintain balance and coordination while performing the complex steps and movements        
Posture- The dancers maintain good posture, exuding confidence and elegance        
Expression- The dancers convey the story emotion of the dance through their facial expressions and body language.        
Stage Presence- The dancers engage the audience and command attention.        
Costumes- Appropriate for the dance and enhance the performance.        
Props-Props are used effectively and safety.        
Overall Presentation- The performance create a memorable and enjoyable experience for the audience.
