Field Day Fractions

Introduction

This is an activity which will require you to convert fractions to decimals, order the decimals, and then design a process for ranking the classrooms from quantitative and qualitative data and then re-test their procedure on a new set of data. Ultimately, you will write a letter explaining and supporting the step-by-step process you used.

You may work as a group to complete this WebQuest.

Concepts you will need to know to complete this assignment:

1.  How to convert fractions to decimals.

2.  How to compare decimals.

Task

Learning Objectives

The Student will be able to:

  • Use decimal notation for fractions.

  • Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size while solving a real-world problem.

  • Write an opinion piece to support your opinion with text-based evidence, and demonstrate the ability to introduce a topic clearly, state an opinion and create an organizational structure.

Your task for this assignment is quite large so I have broken it up into a few days. Take your time, work together, and do your best!  I am here for you if you have any questions!

Process

Supplemental Reading:

Day One:

  • Read or listen to the following passage.  Discuss the importance of good sportsmanship with your group.  Then discuss the reflection questions with your group.
  • Read Passage 1.
  • Pass out Student Worksheet 1.
  • Complete the top portion of the Student Worksheet 1 table by converting the fractions from the 50- and 100-yard dash results into decimals.
  • Then order the decimals (the results of the races) from fastest to slowest.
  • Then complete the Field Day Results Race Winners (bottom table) by assigning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners of the 50- and 100-yard races.
  • Before proceeding, review the results with your group.
  • Now look at Data Set 1.
  • Work in your group to analyze Data Set 1. Develop a process for deciding which option is best for the client.
  • Write a letter using the Letter Template 1 as a guide in response to Reading Passage 1, using the information in Data Set 1 to support your process.
Readiness Questions:
  • What problem do you need to solve?
  • Who is the client?
  • What information will you use to solve the problem?
  • How will you use math to solve the problem?
  • How will you present your answer?

Day Two:

  • Choose one spokesperson to present a quick recap of yesterday's assignment.
  • Then read Reading Passage 2.
  • Follow the same procedure as yesterday by converting the fractions on Student Worksheet 2 into decimals for Mr. Saul's class.
  • Re-order the decimals (the results of the races) from fastest to slowest.
  • Complete the Field Day Results Race Winners (bottom table) by assigning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners of the 50- and 100-yard races.
  • Look at Data Set 2.
  • Work in your group to analyze Data Set 2.
  • Decide if the same process from yesterday still work with the new data.
  • Write a letter using Letter Template 2 as a guide in response to Reading Passage 2, using the information in Data Set 2 to support your process.
Comprehension/readiness questions

Reading Comprehension Questions:

  • What is sportsmanship?
  • Why is it important?
  • What are some examples of good sportsmanship?
  • What are some examples of bad sportsmanship?
  • Where are some off the field places where you can practice sportsmanship?

Data related questions:

  • What is the most important part of the data set when making your decision?
  • What difficulties did you have when making your choice?
  • How did you come to that decision?
