Fences by August Wilson - Negro Baseball League

Task

The play Fences makes many references to specific players in the Negro Baseball League and the league overall. You wil create a baseball card for ONE player in the Negro Baseball League. It will contain:

  • A real photograph of the actual player
  • Name, Date of Birth, Hometown, Negro League Team(s)
  • Position played
  • Relevant stats
  • Five significant facts about the player

After completing the card you will write a paragraph that answers one of the following questions.

  • Why is this player an important part of African American history: What did he contribute to African Americans of the time and of today?
  • How might professional sports in 2018 be different if it were not for your chosen player?
  • What choices, similar to or different from, woiuld you have made had you been in his position during his time in the Negro Baseball League.

Process

Step 1:  You will research a Negro League Player

Step 2: You will create a baseball card for your player. 

Step 3: Create your baseball card using Google Docs.

  • Front of the card should include a picture of the player and his name.
  • Back of the card should include all researched information:
  • In Google Docs go to File and then page setup, in page setup select Landscape and change the margins to .5. Go to Format and down to Column Options, select the picture of TWO columns. The first column will be the front of your card, the second column will be the back.

Step 4. Write a reflective paragraph using the questions in the TASK pane.
