A famous explorer

Introduction

Dear students, welcome to your mission! Today you get to know a famous explorer and learn about their discoveries! Now, get ready for your adventure. 

Task

Alone or with a partner, choose one explorer from the list below.

  • Marco Polo (Italian explorer)
  • Henry Hudson (English sea explorer)
  • Neil Armstrong (astronaut)
  • Sir Edmund Hillary (mountaineer)
  • Ernest Henry Shackleton (polar explorer)
  • Jane Goodall (expert on chimpanzees)
  • Sylvia Earl (ocean explorer)
  • choose an own explorer

Once you have chosen a famous explorer, you and your partner will research information on your explorer online with the resources I have provided for you (see "process"). 

Collect information on:

  • General facts (birthdate, birthplace, kind of discovery, date of discovery, ...)
  • Work      
  • Travel                                                                                                                                                                                      
  • Discovery
  • Difficulties and problems
  • Results of expedition 
  • Any other interesting facts                                                                                         

You will have choices on how to show what you have learned about your explorer.  

  • You may write a report.  
  • You may create a digital presentation. 
  • You may create a poster with your information. 
  • If you have another idea, check with Mrs. Carrier.  

Once all tasks are completed, you (and your partner) will present your explorer and their discovery to the class!

Evaluation

I'll hand you out an evaluation sheet with all criteria you'll get points for. The evaluated categories are:

  • research work (20 points)
  • presented work (30 points)
  • presentation of your work (30 points)
  • creativity (10 points)
Conclusion

Now that you are done, you have learned important facts about an important explorer. You have learned about their major accomplishments and interesting facts about their personal lives. Remember to share this new information with friends and family!
