Sean just got his first job as a stock person at Mariano’s. The manager greets Sean and assigns him his first task. The manager waves his hand over the entire mess at the delivery entrance, and says, “These need to be put into the cooler. Separate the boxes by apple type and put the Granny Smiths on the left side, the Golden Delicious in the middle, and the Red Delicious on the right. Then put some of each out in the store in the produce section.” Before Sean can ask any questions, an urgent summons for the manager comes over the intercom system and he rushes off.
Sean looks at the cases and sees no labels on the boxes. “No problem,” Sean says to himself. “I’ll just look in the boxes to see what’s what.” So Sean looks in the boxes. However, he only sees two different colors of apples, not three. The only identifying feature is a number on a sticker. Just as he is about to panic, another worker walks by. “How do you tell the difference between Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious apples?” Sean asks him. The coworker gives Sean a strange look and says, “The Granny Smiths are green, the Golden Delicious are yellow, and the Red Delicious are red. Duh!” Sean thinks to himself: “Why can’t I see three colors? Is it my eyes, or something else that affects how we are able to see?”
Task
You have been contracted as an engineer to design a device that could be used by Sean to help distinguish the three apple colors from one another.
Create a brochure, marketing your design to aid a person who is color blind to distinguish colors, including information about how we are able to see colors, based on what we have discussed in class.
Make sure you answer these questions:
- What is your design?
- How will it work?
- How do the properties of light and the structure of the human eyes allow us to see color?
- What causes color blindness?
Process
Make the brochure using 8 ½ by 11-inch paper, folded to make three sections or a tri-fold brochure. You can use the Tri-Fold Brochure Template in Microsoft Word.
Make sure the brochure includes the following:
- Outer top page: Make this the title page. Be creative; make up your own device and manufacturing company names, including graphics and drawings relating to the topic.
- On the first page you open up, to catch the reader’s attention, provide an illustration of your design.
- On the inner panels, provide information that answers the questions:
- What is your design?
- How will the design work?
- How do the properties of light and the structure of the human eyes allow us to see color?
- What causes color blindness?
- On the center back panel, provide your name, class period and due date, as well as a list of your sources.
Evaluation
The brochure will be evaluated by the following criteria:
- Technical Content = 50%
- A drawing and description of your design is included
- Information is included on both the structure of the eye and light
- Information is correct and accurate
- All panels are relevant to topic
- Sources are included
- Organization and Appearance = 50%
- The information is organized in a logical way – it flows
- All spelling and grammar are correct
- It is visually appealing: color is used, it is neat
Conclusion
Congratulations! Your product has brought countless users to tears as they experience a vibrant color-filled world for the first time. Once skeptical eye doctors are now stocking your design to provide additional options to colorblind patients.
