Exploring Our Solar System

Introduction

solar system large

Our solar system is an amazing place!  Let's prepare to explore our "place in space" over the next month of our science studies!

Task

Task 1:  Explore the following website to learn general information about our solar system.

Our Solar System:

Task 2:  In our Solar System Show this February, you will portray an element of the solar system or an astronaut.  You will choose music to make your entrance, create your costume at home, research your heavenly body, take notes, and write a first-person narrative script as that heavenly body.

Below, you will find several links to websites for the heavenly bodies featured in our show this year.  Find your topic, read, and begin to take notes on your heavenly body.  3....2....1...Blast off!

Process

1. We will learn general information about the solar system to "build our mental files." This will include reading a nonfiction text, watching "Space School" videos on YouTube, and exploring the two websites from Task 1.

2. You will then be assigned your heavenly body.  Using books and this WebQuest, you will research interesting facts, your mythology (if this applies), your distance from the Sun (or Earth), your physical features and description, your temperature, and anything else you might wish to include.  You will write this information in your notes.

3. You will then take these notes and organize them into a first person narrative script, speaking as if you are the heavenly body.  Organization, voice (letting your personality come through in the writing), and varying sentence beginnings will be our writer's craft focus in this assignment.  You will edit this draft, reorganize it as needed, edit, and write a second draft if needed.  I will take your final work and type it into your script that you will read.

4. At home or at school, you will be selecting music for your entrance.  You will also be creating a costume that you will wear in the show.

5. Once the scripts are completed, you will practice public speaking skills, adjusting your microphone, and fluent reading.  The final part of the project will be to perform in front on an audience.

Evaluation

Using a rubric, you will be evaluated on the following:

1. Costume (not store bought, created by you, brought in by deadline, easy to put on and take off, not too wide for microphone)

2. Public Speaking Skills/Performance

3. Script:  Content and Organization, Sentence Structure/Grammar/Usage, Mechanics/ Conventions (spelling, capitalization, punctuation), and Voice (shows the writer's feelings)

4. Accuracy of Facts

5. Independence and Perseverance in research and script writing

6. Editing for spelling, punctuation and capitalization
