Exploring Ocean Tides: Why Does the Ocean Rise and Fall?

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why the ocean seems to rise and fall throughout the day? Why are there high tides and low tides? What causes these changes?

In this WebQuest, you will become a Tidal Investigator. You will explore reliable information on the Internet to discover how the Moon, Sun, and Earth interact to produce ocean tides.

Your goal is not simply to find information. You will investigate the evidence, organize what you discover, and use it to explain how tides happen.

Task

Your task is to investigate the causes of ocean tides and create a Tidal Investigation Report or infographic.

Your final product should:

  1. Explain what ocean tides are.
  2. Identify the main factors that cause tides.
  3. Explain the role of the Moon.
  4. Explain how the Sun affects tides.
  5. Describe the difference between high tide and low tide.
  6. Explain spring tides and neap tides.
  7. Include a simple diagram showing the relationship among the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
  8. Provide the sources you used.

At the end of the activity, you should be able to explain the question:

“Why does the ocean rise and fall?”

Process

Step 1 – Become a Tidal Investigator

Begin by researching what tides are. Read the information provided in the resources section and write down at least three important facts about ocean tides.

Step 2 – Investigate the Moon

Find out why the Moon has an important effect on Earth's oceans.

Answer:

  • Why does the Moon affect ocean water?
  • What happens to the ocean when the Moon's gravitational pull affects it?
  • Why does the location of the Moon matter?

Step 3 – Investigate the Sun

The Moon is not the only object that affects tides.

Research the Sun's role in tides and answer:

  • How does the Sun affect Earth's tides?
  • What happens when the gravitational effects of the Sun and Moon work together?

Step 4 – Compare High Tide and Low Tide

Research the difference between high tide and low tide.

Create a simple comparison:

High Tide: ______________________

Low Tide: ______________________

Then explain why the water level changes.

Step 5 – Explore Spring and Neap Tides

Investigate the terms spring tide and neap tide.

Explain:

  • What is a spring tide?
  • What is a neap tide?
  • What positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun are involved?

Step 6 – Create Your Diagram

Create a simple diagram showing the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

Use arrows, labels, and short explanations to show how their positions and gravitational effects are related to tides.

Step 7 – Create Your Final Product

Use the information you collected to create your Tidal Investigation Report or infographic.

Your final product should be organized, accurate, easy to understand, and supported by the resources you used.

Step 8 – Reflect

After completing your investigation, answer:

What is the most important thing you learned about ocean tides, and how did the information you found on the Internet help you understand it?

Resources

Use reliable educational resources to complete your investigation.

You may use additional reliable educational websites, but remember to record the sources you use.

Evaluation

Your work will be evaluated using the following rubric:

Criteria Excellent – 4 Good – 3 Developing – 2 Beginning – 1
Understanding of Tides Gives a clear and accurate explanation of tides and their causes Explanation is mostly accurate Some important information is missing Explanation is unclear or inaccurate
Moon and Sun Clearly explains the roles of both the Moon and Sun Explains both with minor gaps Explains only one clearly Gives little or incorrect information
Diagram Accurate, clearly labeled, and easy to understand Mostly accurate and labeled Some labels or relationships are missing Diagram is incomplete or confusing
Use of Resources Uses reliable sources and identifies them Uses appropriate sources with minor omissions Uses few sources Sources are missing or inappropriate
Final Product Well-organized, creative, clear, and complete Organized and mostly complete Some organization or content problems Incomplete or difficult to understand
Reflection Thoughtful explanation of learning and use of resources Clearly describes learning Gives a limited reflection Reflection is missing or unclear

Total: 24 points

Grading Scale

  • 21–24 points: Excellent
  • 17–20 points: Good
  • 13–16 points: Developing
  • 6–12 points: Beginning

Conclusion

Congratulations, Tidal Investigator!

Through this WebQuest, you investigated one of the important processes occurring in Earth's oceans. You explored the roles of the Moon, Sun, and Earth and learned how their interactions are connected to high tides, low tides, spring tides, and neap tides.

More importantly, you practiced finding information on the Internet, evaluating resources, organizing information, and using evidence to explain a scientific phenomenon.

Before you finish, think about this question:

If the Moon suddenly disappeared, what do you think would happen to Earth's tides? Why?
