"Welcome, Cultural Explorers! You’re about to set off on an incredible journey to some of the most famous landmarks on Earth. Each team will become guardians and storytellers for one of these legendary sites. Your mission? To dive deep into the past, uncover hidden tales, and discover the mysteries that make your landmark unforgettable. As Cultural Explorers, you’ll play an important role in helping others appreciate and protect these incredible sites. By uncovering their histories and stories, you’re contributing to the preservation of our shared human heritage.”

"As you explore, you’ll read and investigate to reveal what makes these places so special. What stories do they hold? Why do people from around the world come to visit them? And how have they captured the hearts and minds of people across centuries? By becoming experts and sharing what you uncover, you’ll help others see why these landmarks are treasures worth protecting."

 

Task

"Your team will be assigned a famous landmark and become its cultural ambassadors! Through reading, you’ll uncover the landmark’s fascinating history, unique stories, and its importance in the world today. Your mission is to create an engaging ‘Cultural Heritage Report’ that introduces your landmark to others and brings its story to life."

Final Product:



"Your team will create a section on a class Padlet board (or Google Slides) called 'Cultural Heritage Reports' dedicated to your landmark. This will be your team's chance to share everything that makes your landmark special and memorable. Your report should include an intriguing title, a historical summary, a unique fact or legend, and at least one eye-catching visual and a hyperlink to an external resource."

 

Your Report Should Include:

  • Title: A creative title that reflects the spirit of your landmark.
  • Historical Summary: A 3–5 sentence summary explaining the landmark’s history and cultural significance.
  • Unique Fact or Legend: One interesting story or fact that gives your landmark a magical or memorable touch.

  • A hyperlink to an external resource: Further exploration of your landmark, encouraging interactive exploration.

In this WebQuest, you will work as a team to uncover the rich history and unique stories behind some of the world’s most famous landmarks. By participating, you will develop important skills, including:

  • Research and Critical Thinking: You’ll analyse historical sources and identify key information, learning how to evaluate the cultural significance of landmarks.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Working with your classmates, you’ll take on different roles within your team, helping each other succeed as cultural ambassadors.
  • Digital Literacy: You’ll use online tools like Padlet and digital resources to gather information and create a visually engaging presentation.
  • Creative Communication: By designing and presenting your “Cultural Heritage Report,” you’ll practice organizing information creatively and clearly for an audience.

Through this project, you’ll become a storyteller for your landmark, helping others appreciate the importance of preserving our shared cultural heritage.

Step 1: Vocabulary Exploration and Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Step 2: Landmark Detective Investigation  (25 minutes)

 

Instructions:

"Now it’s time to step into the shoes of a landmark detective! The teacher will divide the classroom in five teams each of which will be assigned with a landmark. With your team, read through the resources for your assigned landmark. Your goal is to uncover the landmark’s history, special stories, and why it has been remembered for so long."

Guiding Questions :

As you read, look for answers to these questions and jot down your discoveries. These will help you put together your final report.

  1. What is the historical significance of this landmark?

    Why is this place an important part of history?

  2. What unique fact or legend makes this landmark special?

    Look for a surprising story or an old legend that adds something magical to your landmark!

  3. What makes this landmark a memorable part of human history?

    Think about why people around the world still visit and talk about this place today.

Step 3: Reflection and In-Depth Exploration (15 minutes)

Now that you’ve gathered basic information from the initial resources, let’s take a moment to dive deeper into your landmark. This step is designed to help you connect what you’ve learned with broader ideas and understand the significance of your landmark in a new way.

Instructions:

  1. Access the Reflection Document: Open the Google Document Landmarks - Worksheets - Έγγραφα Google to find thought-provoking questions and activities that will expand on what you’ve learned.
  2. Complete the Activities: Follow each prompt in the document, reflecting on your landmark’s historical, cultural, and modern-day significance. Use what you’ve learned to answer these questions thoughtfully.
  3. Take Notes: Write down your responses and any new ideas you discover in the document.
  4. Share Your Insights with Your Team: After completing this step, bring your reflections to your team discussion. Together, consider how these new insights might enrich your final report.

Purpose: This step encourages you to think critically and deepen your understanding by connecting facts with personal reflections, helping you to see the broader impact of your landmark.

Step  4 : Reimagining Your Landmark (10 minutes)

Instructions:

"Imagine that you were part of the group that built or discovered your landmark! Work with your team to think about what you would want people to know and remember. Use these questions to inspire your ideas, and write down your thoughts to add a creative twist to your report. To help you imagine, explore the links provided below for a unique perspective of your landmark through interactive tours, videos, and virtual experiences."

Step 5 : Building Your Cultural Heritage Report (30 minutes)

"Now it’s time to gather everything you’ve discovered into an eye-catching report! Think of this as your chance to introduce others to the wonders of your landmark. Use Padlet (or Google Slides) to create your team’s section on our class board."

  • Title: Make it creative and memorable—something that reflects the essence of your landmark.

  • Do not evaluate your own team—skip your team’s section and rate only the other teams.
  • For each team, use the 1–5 scale on the form to rate their presentation.

Total Score Calculation

Each team can earn a maximum of 15 points (5 points per category). Here’s how the total scores reflect overall performance:

  • 7–9 Points: Adequate but could benefit from further enhancement in one or more areas.
  • 10–12 Points: Strong presentation, meeting expectations with some notable elements.
  • 13–15 Points: Excellent presentation, with high engagement and understanding across all criteria.
