Exploring Human Rights

Introduction

Human Rights WebQuest

Human beings all need basic things to survive. These include having access to clean water, food, and shelter. There are millions of people around the world who do not have access to these things. Some individuals might deny others access to these things for any number of reasons.  The systematic abuse of human rights is a significant problem facing the world today. You will use this webquest to learn more about human rights and how they are abused. You will do this by  exploring the meaning of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was passed by the United Nations unanimously in 1948.  You will then choose one of the 30 articles to research further.

Task

The Human Rights Mission

The class will be divided into five groups.  Each group will read 6 of the 30 Articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  In your group, you must complete the 6 Article Worksheet.  As a group, you must then decide which one of your 6 articles to investigate further.  See the chart below to determine your group and your assigned articles.

Process

Process

  • Go to the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights page and read your group's assigned articles.  As a group, complete the 6 Article Worksheet.  (Only one worksheet per group will be turned in.)
  • As a group, choose one of your six assigned articles to research further and highlight/circle that article on your 6 Article Worksheet.  You will complete a five-part google slides presentation (or prezi) on this article, and how it has been violated at some point in history.  The five parts of the presentation are listed below.  I suggest each group member tackle one of the four  main parts.  Remember to include the resources you used at the end of your presentation.  Check the Resources tab for some websites to help you get started.
