Exploring Ecosystems

Introduction

Prompt students with the question "What is an ecosystem?" and with their answers lead an in-class discussion on background knowledge of the subject. After the discussion show a detailed power point explaining what an ecosystem is and what different types exist. In this power point, students should be given all knowledge needed to complete the assignment.

Task

To include all different types of learners students will be broken up into groups to create a poster board of one specific biome. Students should include a drawing of their biome, label key components, and briefly describe how organisms interact. After all poster boards are made students will have to present to the class explaining their understanding of their biome.

Process

Students will be given poster boards, markers, labels, and creative freedom to complete their projects. Students should work together to create a plan of who will be in charge of what during the project. All knowledge should be shared so that when presenting the project all group members have a deep understanding of the biome.

Evaluation

Poster boards will be graded on a 60-point mark leaving 20 points for the presentation. 20 points will go for the drawing of the ecosystem. Points will be deducted for false information, lack of information, and ineligibility. 20 points will go for labeling key components within the ecosystem such as plants, animals, and the environment. Points will be deduced for false information, lack of information, and ineligibility. 20 points will go for the description of how organisms interact within the environment. Points will be deduced for false information, lack of information, and ineligibility. The final 20 points will go to the presentation. points will be deduced for lack of understanding, inability to answer questions, and giving false answers.

Conclusion

Recap the key points discussed in the lesson and projects. Ask students to share one new thing they learned about ecosystems. Distribute an ecosystem worksheets for students to complete as a follow-up activity.
