Introduction
Hello Researchers!⛰️
Have you ever seen another place in a book or on TV and noticed that it has different weather, plants, and animals than where we live? These are called habitats! A habitat is a special home where different plants and animals live.
Guiding Questions:
- What kinds of habitats exist around the world?
- What plants and animals live in each habitat?
- How are the habitats similar and how are they different?
Learning Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will de able to identify different habitats, describe the plants and animals that live there, and compare/contrast the different habitats.
Florida Science Standards (2nd Grade)
- SC.2.L.17.1: Compare and Contrast the basic needs that all living things, including humans, have for survival.
- SC.2.L.17.2: Recognize and explain that living things are found all over Earth, but each is only able to live in habitats that meet its basic needs.
Bloom’s Taxonomy (2nd Grade Level)
- Remember: Students recall what a habitat is
- Understand: Students explain what makes each habitat unique
- Apply: Students place animals and plants into the right habitats
- Analyze: Students compare/contrast habitats
- Create: Students design a poster to show their knowledge
Task
You will work in a group to become habitat explorers! Each group will be given a habitat and your job is to create a poster to teach your classmates about your habitat. On the poster you will:
- Explain the weather your habitat experiences.
- Name 4 animals that live in your habitat
- Name 3 plants that grow in your habitat
At the end, everyone will get an opportunity to share their explorations with the class!
Process
1. Class Learning:
- Watch a video to learn about habitats:
2. Group Work: Exploring Your Habitat
- Separate into groups of 4~5, receive habitat from teacher
- Watch video to explore your habitat with your group:

Decide on what your role will be:
- Animal Finder: Name the different animals you found
- Plant Finder: Name the different plants you found
- Weather Researcher: Explain the climate of your habitat
- Artist/Write: Design and color the poster, and write a small paragraph putting everything together
-
Create your poster!
3. Sharing Your Habitat!
- Present your poster to your classmates!
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
| What to look for: | Excellent! | Almost there! | Needs Help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information on Poster |
Poster contains all information required and is creatively designed. Paragraph is written clearly and summarizes the poster. |
Poster contains most of the information required, and is somewhat designed creatively. Paragraph is written somewhat clearly and summarizes most of the poster. | Poster does not contain all of the information required and is not designed creatively. Paragraph is not written clearly and does not summarize the poster. |
| Teamwork | All students got along and did the part of the poster they were assigned. | Most students got along and did part of the poster they were assigned | Students did not get along and did not work on the part of the poster they were assigned. |
| Presentation | Group presented information clearly. | Group presented information somewhat clearly. | Group was difficult to understand, did not present information clearly. |
Conclusion
Great job explorers! You discovered that there are many different types of habitats in the world, and together we learned how they are alike and different.
Now think about this: If you could live in any habitat, which one would you choose and why?
