Exploring Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, , and Social Cognitive Theory.

Introduction

Hello Class!

Welcome to the planet of psychology. Pretend you are on a mission to understand the human mind so that you can explain it to a group of people.

Throughout this webquest we will explore the three big ideas of psychology. We will deep dive into the way people think and learn, and it all stems from Cognitive psychology, Behaviorism, and the Social Cognitive Theory. By exploring these three ideas we will soon understand why we learn and behave the way we do. While each theory plays a part in different things, they each make up the big picture of why we are the way we are!

By the end of this Webquest you will:

-Understand the overall picture of each theory

-Compare and contrast each theory and their relation to learning

-Think about how we use these ideas in everyday life

Task

Today we will:

Explore the theories by researching the three perspectives (Cognitive, Behavioral, and Social) and by working in assigned groups using the provided links.

Analyze the research and create a chart that compares the theories

Create a poster that explains the theories in detail, and how the theory relates to our learning abilities.

We will need:

Our computers (for research)

Links to websites (for research)

Pencil & Paper (to write down information)

Poster Board & Markers/Crayons (to create project)

Process

Group #1: You will research Cognitive Psychology by using the provided websites, and your computers.

Cognitive Psychology is about how we THINK and understand/process information. (Just like we are about to do RIGHT NOW.)

https://www.verywellmind.com/cognitive-psychology-4157181

https://study.com/academy/lesson/video/what-is-cognitive-psychology-definition-theories-quiz.html

During your research answer these questions:

What is Cognitive Psychologies main focus?

How do our brains help us make decisions and learn?

What is memory?

Group #2: You will research Behavioral Psychology by using the provided websites, and your computer

Behavioral psychology is based on how we REACT to the things around us.

https://www.verywellmind.com/behavioral-psychology-4157183

https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/mcat/behavior/theories-personality/v/behavioral-theory

During your research answer these questions:

What does behaviorism teach us about the way we learn?

How do rewards and punishments affect behavior?

Explain a time you were rewarded for showing good behavior. What happened if you showed bad behavior?

Group #3: You will research Social Cognitive Theory by using the provided websites, and your computer

Social Cognitive Theory is about how we LEARN BY WATCHING others.

https://www.ruralhealthinfo.org/toolkits/health-promotion/2/theories-and-models/social-cognitive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSXyQL3ZfdU

During your research answer these questions:

How do we learn from watching other people?

Does the term "role-model" mean anything in this theory?

Tell me about a time you learned from watching someone else.

ONCE YOU ARE DONE RESEARCHING!!!!

Join someone else from a DIFFERENT group and take notes on what each of you gathered from the theories you researched, switch to a different person from a different group until you have information on all three perspectives.

Fill out this chart by using the information you gathered from your research:

THEORY FOCUS OF THEORY KEY IDEA EXAMPLE IN REAL LIFE
Cognitive Psychology
Behavioral Psychology
Social Cognitive Theory

After completing the chart above:

Create a poster that explains each theory in detail. Remember: You are trying to teach others about the three theories.

Your poster should include:

-The clear definition of each theory

-A drawing or an image that represents each theory

- One real life example of how the theory works. (You can use one of the examples of a time you remember using it in your own life).

Conclusion

Congratulations Students!

You have officially learned all about the three major ideas of psychology. You now have a clear and better understanding of why humans learns and behave the way we do. By comparing all three of these theories you now are filled with information on this topic to share with as many people as you want, and even have a poster for reference!

As you go on to share this information with people all over the planet, think about how you can apply these theories in your own personal life.

Ask yourself these questions:

How are we using all three perspectives every single day in the classroom?

Can we use all three theories at one time?
