Explorers of Space

Introduction

Explorers of Space WebQuest is intended to help you gain background knowledge of past major space explorations, significant advancements that have come from space explorations, and the explorers who were involved. 

You will journey into space along with the explorers by means of the internet to learn more about space.

Task

1. Visit the following website and read about several famous space explorers, then do the following steps.

  • Select one space explorer.
  • Read and take notes on what you learn about the explorer
  • Create a power point presentation with at least 3 slide containing facts about the explorer.
  • Insert images of the explorer into the presentation.

2. Go to the NASA Kid's Club website, and explore.

  • Test your astronaut skills by playing the game "Roving on Mars".
  • Search "Apollo 11 Videos"
  • Watch the video "One Small Step"

3. Go to We Choose the Moon, and complete the Apollo 11 mission, then answer the following questions.

  • What stage of the simulation was your favorite part, and why?
  • What do you think the most difficult part of the actual mission was for the astronauts on Apollo 11? What do you think was the easiest part?
  • Print a copy of your completion certificate, and hand it in. 

4. Read the interview with NASA astronaut, Nick Hayes, regarding the recent failed Soyuz launch, and answer the following questions.

  • Where did NASA intend for this rocket to end up?
  • How many times has Nick Hayes been to the International Space Station?
  • What are the benefits, if any, that will come from this failed launch?
  • What is the difference between and astronaut and a cosmonaut?
  • Put yourself in Nick Hayes' shoes. What would be going through your mind?
