Introduction
By now, we have explored many different concepts of math. Have you ever thought to yourself, "Who comes up with math equations and math ideas?" Well, today we're going to explore the lives of some of the most famous mathematicians!
Task
1) First, you are going to define what a mathematician does and the different levels of "mathematicians".
2) You will explore Pythagoras of Samos and answer some questions about him and what he accomplished.
3) Next, you will read about Albert Einstein.
4) Scroll down to Maria Gaetana Agnesi and read about her.
5) Analyze the bullet points about Marjorie Lee Brown.
6) Read about Alan Turing.
Process
Click the link and answer the questions about each on the handout given. mathematician. https://www.twinkl.com/teaching-wiki/famous-mathematicians
Define (in your own words!)
1) mathematician:
2) professional mathematician:
3) famous mathematician:
Pythagoras of Samos
1) When and where did he live?
2) What did he do there?
3) What did he focus on?
4) Give 3 examples of his findings.
Albert Einstein
1) When and where did he live?
2) Name a strength and a weakness about Einstein's school life.
3) What did his papers change?
4) What was his most famous discovery? Explain.
Maria Gaetana Agnesi
1) When and where did she live?
2) She was the first woman to do what?
3) What was her book called in English?
4) What was her book about?
Marjorie Lee Browne
1) When and where did she live?
2) What is she best known for?
4) What was unique about her?
Alan Turing
1) When and where did he live?
2) What did he invent and what was it considered?
3) How did he help the British army?
4) What did he receive in 1946?
Evaluation
Did the student answer the questions accurately?
| 0 | 1-4 | 5 | Score | |
| What is a Mathematician? | Student did not answer the questions about mathematicians | Student answered the questions but not all of them were correct | Student answered all of the questions correctly | ___/5 |
| Pythagoras of Samos | Student did not answer the questions about this mathematician | Student answered the questions but not all of them were correct | Student answered all of the questions correctly | ___/5 |
| Albert Einstein | Student did not answer the questions about this mathematician | Student answered the questions but not all of them were correct | Student answered all of the questions correctly | ___/5 |
